I graduated high school about 3 weeks after my 17th birthday. 3 months later, I left to go to college. Have never lived with any of those original family members again. Not even during summer vacations. Once I left, I was gone (aside from visits).
18. I come home for winter break (the dorms close) and occasionally part of summer break- but that's part of the deal I got because my parents are not paying for my college at all. I go to school 1000 miles away from home and have already studied abroad about 3000 miles away in Iceland and will study abroad in Mexico and England in the next year.
Lived on campus in college but moved home for my masters while I was teaching... all my salery went to the edu. So, I was left in my twin bed at the folk's house... But I got engaged and married off a month after I turned 24... so I wasn't there more than 5 months after I got my masters when I married and THEN moved in with my hubby... I did it the old fashioned way.
I did spend three months at home after 1 1/2 years away at college. I was taking a break from college but had to save up some money to move. Thats it (although I did visit a lot my first year in college).
I was 18. I joined the Air Force right after high school and was soon in Germany for 3 years. I put myself through college after the AF and never returned home to live.
I'll tell my kids what my parents told me after high school. You can live here for free if you're in college, otherwise you're getting a job and paying rent or moving out! Of course my preference will be that they attend college.
I quit high school, got my GED, and moved out at 17. I'd been working since I was 14. Worked and went to school (community college). I got pregnant at 19 (a week away from 20), and when my son was 4 months old, due to the neighborhood being very scary and my father cutting me off financially (he'd been helping pay for school), I moved back with family ... first my mom for a couple months, then my grandma (mom is insane). I moved out again when my son was 15 months old and haven't been back.
My son (now 16) knows that I moved out at 17 and uses this when we have arguments. I don't want him moving out that young and he knows it, and the reasons I did so were justified (did I mention my mom was/is nuts!)... I figure he'll stick around some despite what he says when he's mad at me. I have told him that after graduation I expect him to either work and help out some or go to school, if he is going to stay here. If he's in school then I'll support him, especially since I cannot hope to pay all his education expenses but if he doesn't go to college he will be expected to work and pay some money towards the general household expenses.
