The easiest explanation is that ritalin is much like the illegal drug called Speed. Literally. Ritalin is a legal form of Speed.
ADD/ADHD are very unique in that, though the kid cannot seem to stop moving... it's actually caused by part of the brain going too
slow. Ritalin, being a
stimulant speeds up that portion of the brain - allowing the child to be more calm. Yes, as weird as it sounds - a stimulant is used to slow a child down.
Coffee and other caffeine-filled items (there's even a chewing gum) work in the same manner in that they speed you up. On mild cases of ADD/ADHD, a cup of coffee in the morning, a soda at lunch, and one at dinner works the same way as Ritalin (et al).
However, when given a misdiagnosis or a misdosage of Ritalin (et al), children/adults can become zombies because the medication speeds the body up, but when it slows down - there's a "crash." Energy drinks have the same effect.
I hope this explanation helps you out.
