Anyone celebrate Kwanzaa? I home school for for this mouth we are learning the different ways people celebrate the holidays. Because we are adopted parents and our daughter is African American I wanted to celebrate Kwanzaa. WE are learning about it next week because we will be out of town for Christmas. Any good tips , crafts or anything
I don't really have any ideas...but I have always liked the idea of Kwanzaa (a virtue a day). We too will be adopting (from Africa, and we have 2 bio's) and would like to incorperate Kwanzaa into our family traditions. So I have been planning on having a daily little discussion with my kids about each day's virtue and how they can practice it.
Kwanzaa is a celebration celebrated by those with deep African roots with much of daily life devoted to being involved in the African culture, not so much by those who are very removed it.
My husband, who is black, has never celebrated Kwanzaa in his life. Actually he had never even heard of it when we first discusssed it years ago. His extended family just doesn't feel the need to dig that far back in their heritage I guess, and instead prefer to practice their usual American cultural practices instead. They don't consider Africa their true culture, but instead it belongs to their distant relatives.
So, with that being said, I think it would be nice to touch on the celebration, but not focus on it. Go to the official website for much more in depth ideas if you need. Good luck
As a black person, I never and my fam never, celebrated Kwanzaa. I think its kind of a silly holiday. There are plenty of other AF-AM traditions, IMO, that you can celebrate with your daughter. However, it may be worthwhile to learn about it and its origins. This is all my opinion of course, and I'm sure you'll do what is best for your daughter,
Good for you for choosing to recognize Kwanzaa for your daughter! I know many libraries, especially those in areas with a high population of African Americans have a number of crafts and festivities.
Now with that said, as an African American, I have never celebrated it. I feel too far removed from any African roots and would feel like I'm "frontin". I know other AF-AM who celebrate it.

You be frontin' already
