Cable is very expensive, and YES, TV is like crack cocaine. People get seriously addicted to it. Ever watch someone who is addicted to TV? Their brain turns off and all they do is stare at the boob tube.

I stopped watching TV years ago. Now I watch Netflix movies.

Unfortunately, I am now addicted to my computer.

We only have two TV's. One is specifically for the game system and the other is in the living room. My oldest (14yo)is constantly bugging me for a TV in his room but I refuse. Both my kids TV time is limited to one hour a day and the shows they watch must be pre-approved by me(I lock all the channels that they aren't allowed to watch anyway). Yes they complain, but they spend much more time outside getting exercise or playing with toys in their rooms.

Growing up, I had a TV with cable and a VCR in my room and no restrictions of what I was and wasn't allowed to watch. I think back to the kind of stuff I was exposed and how crappy I felt after a day of sitting around watching TV and I refuse to do the same to my kids.

TV is something like the refrigerator. It is a useful instrument, but if you can't learn to say No to it, you can become bloated with a lot of harmful gunk. I've raised small children with it, and without it. I can't say there is much difference between how they turned out. Perhaps the most important thing is to arrange your life so there are other things going on that are more interesting or beneficial than TV. (He says, as he sits at his computer for hours of message-board engagement!)

(We won't get rid of our actual TVs though b/c we will still watch DVDs and use the Xbox and stuff.)
Just an update - they are coming Monday to take away our cable box! Thanks for the motivation!

Haha! Yep, that sounds like me! I haven't decided yet if one is better than the other...

I haven't had cable since hurricane Elvis knocked my power out for two weeks back in '03. Realzed I didn't really miss it, now I just use my TV's for the game systems and the occasional rented movies. My kids moaned for a few weeks, and then discovered they could keep up with their favorite shows on their computers.

Cable went away yesterday afternoon and the kids' kvetching was held to a minimum.

Yes, the internet, too, is addictive. I am somewhat obsessed when it comes to CD I tend to think of it as my cyber neighborhood bar, ala Cheers.

I loved the refrigerator analogy. So true.

I remember once when the electricity when off in the summertime. It was like the whole world came to a stop. I suddenly did not know what to do with myself.

When my husband and I were newly weds living in a one room apartment our TV broke and we couldn't afford a new one so we just chunked it in a closet and went without. Our friends gave us such a hard time "Where is your TV?" that we finally put the broken one back where it belonged and just never used it! People find it so strange that you can not have TV.
