gentle patting on the upper back between the shoulder blades...might I suggest the book "What to Expect the FIrst Year" by Heidi Murkoff. Simple, easy to understand, great guide for every little thing during your baby's 1st year. I had it when my DS was born.
For a particularly cranky baby, place him (her?) on your lap face down with her face by your knees and feet/legs towards your stomach. gently sway your legs back & forth while tapping on his back gently. (or rubbing the back in a circular movement) Usually the two forms of movement will get you a nice loud URP!
Its been a long time since I had a newborn! Try holding his/her belly to your chest with his head on your shoulder and rub his back gently but firmly - you might have to squeeze a little to get the burp!

Congrats on your new baby.
Lay it face down on your legs with its head at your knees.
Pat the back and give a comfort rub at times.
This way you wont have to change your shirt/blouse when it spits up on you.
I raised 6 kids. After the 1st one, I figured out how not to get sour milk dripping down my neck. Some of those burps are hydraulic.
The wife said it was my job to burp them and have a bonding time after she fed them. Guess she knew how to avoid the wet neck from the get go.
This is for the babies who seem to get burps "stuck":
Whether you use the holding over your shoulder or sitting on your lap method, I learned that it's good to alternate rubbing the baby's back up and down, rubbing in circles and rubbing (in an up and down motion) just your thumb on one side of the baby's backbone and your middle finger on the other. Keep alternating these three methods, about 10 seconds each - the burps will come!
gently bounce the baby on your knee, then pat gently on the back or rub in circles on the back.
