No free lunch: Schools get tough on deadbeats - Education- msnbc.com

In New Mexico and across the country schools are feeding cheese sandwiches to those who run up lunch bills and don't pay. Parents are insulted and kids are wanting something else.

3/5 of the students in NM are on free or reduced lunches and even more than that don't pay for their meals at school.

Other states have instituted policy to stop handing out free food to students who continually charge lunches.

I worked for several years for a school in Michigan and we did that. It isn't like the parents don't know about the bill , they do. These are mostly people who didn't qualify for free or reduced lunces. The problem is that the kids have to eat this lunce and it isn;t the child;s fault. I just don't know what the solution is.

Wait a minute - cheese sandwich, fruit and milk...besides being a little heavy on the dairy - that's GOOD lunch. Not like we're talking hot water with bread crumbs...:I

The alternative would be...oh, let's say somebody brown-bags it?

I was thinking the same thing. A grilled cheese sandwich, an apple and a glass of milk is still one of my favorite lunches.

Compared to some of the cr@p I remember from the cafeteria that sounds like a pretty good deal.

I think it's easy to let things like paying for school lunches slide by because it is assumed that the school won't let their kids go hungry. Schools can't continue to support these kids and go further and further into the red.

Why aren't these kids carrying their lunches to school? If that 7 year old thought cheese was so revolting, she should have taken something from home for lunch. It isn't up to the school to furnish food for kids who should be paying for it or taking it to school from home.

When my kids were in school, if they forgot their lunch money they got a sticky peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Actually the cheese freebie is an upgrade.

I love the idea of a hot school lunch, but my kids always preferred to bring their own lunch. Maybe with all the school budget cuts, it would be a good idea to consider going to home brought lunches. Most people who qualify for free lunch get food stamps....so they would also be able to do this.

I'm recalling with some humor my mother's rendition of school lunches...there weren't any. The kids went home for lunch or brought something with them. Of course, they had to walk uphill both ways...

Oh of course. And the uphill walk was 4 miles long and it was usually in the snow.
