Do you have any hobbies that you like to do with your kids, or have been teaching to your young kids?
My one main hobby is quilting. (if you couldn't tell by my screen name) I learned how to quilt from my mom and grandmother, but not while I was younger. I did learn to sew at a young age though. But now that I know how to quilt, I have been teaching my kids how. All but one of my girls have made blue ribbon quilts pretty much all by themselves with only a little help from me. The only reason the one daughter hasn't made a blue ribbon quilt is because I have been so busy taking care of the grandbaby I haven't had time to get in and quilt myself. But she has still made a few small quilts like for dolls. I am hoping now that the grandbaby is older, I will be able to get in the sewing room with my youngest and let her finally make her own blue ribbon quilt.
The other hobby I like to do with my kids is putting together jigsaw puzzles. Again it's not something we have been able to do a lot of lately because of the grandbaby. We like to put together the 500-1500 piece puzzles.
My son and I are both avid gamers. I was a gamer as a teen (loved pinball), but had to curtail my interest as I got older. When my son showed an interest in games, it rekindled my own interest. We're both thrilled to have a buddy with whom we can share this hobby!
His friends always thought it was great that I was a gamer-mom, too!
When my stepdaughter was 9, I had no idea she was interested in baseball. One day she came home with some Topps trading cards, and she knew the players. So we started collecting baseball cards together and taking overnight road trips to go to MLB games in several cities---just the two of us. She was wonderful at ball games---she had the guts of a burglar, and would go down and sit in the front row box seats by herself and dare the ushers to kick her out. She loved trying to get players autographs after the game and used her brash and petite cuteness to her advantage there, too.
My son is interested in everything I do, so we write poetry together, paint, and bead (when I have the patience). He also loves to garden with me. My husband and him play golf and hockey and fish together. My youngest son is too young to do many hobbies with me (although he did help me plant today), but he likes to golf, play hockey, and fish with Daddy, as well.
I started getting my 8 year old son into yoga and he'll do some of the pilates exercises On Demand with me. Next year, he can take the classes with me at the gym.
Does watching terrible movies on the Sci Fi channel together count? Zombie, sci-fi, and monster movies. He's anxiously awaiting the new Star Trek movie.
You all sound like you have some very interesting and fun hobbies you like to do with your kids.
It's nice to hear that other parents like to include their kids while doing hobbies. I think it is a great way way to do stuff together, bond and make memories, plus those times can be good times to talk with your kids about school, life, and every thing else.
