When I was done with high school, I was expected to work every summer until college started.

Do you parents think it is normal for a 17 or 18 year old kid to sit home all summer without a job or without going anywhere (and waking up at 7 am every day?)

Please discuss.

I was working at age 16, so, um, no.

I had a job every summer from the time I was 15 and a part-time when I was in college. I saved every penny I could the summer before my freshman year. Tell that kid to get a job!

If you are 16 you should be working during the summer. Especially if you think you are going to do anything fun, like going to the movies, buying new clothes etc.

It's not my kid and I wish he did have a job so he would not be home all day smoking cigarettes, singing and stomping over my head. I get the feeling he does what he wants and 'too bad' for Mom. (he never seemed to go to high school!).

Then again, he may have mental problems or be sickly, so who am I to judge?

Who are you to judge? He's living under your roof and apparently calls you "Mom" which gives you every right to judge and to establish some expectations that he will contribute to the running of the household. As far as finding a job, well, you could tell him that you aren't bankrolling him anymore. Having to pay for his own clothes, cigarettes, entertainment et cetera might motivate him get out the door and earn some money.

Tell him if he's not going to go out and look for a job, then he has 30 days to find another place to live.

then nail his door shut at the end of 30 days, and toss his luggage with his clothes onto the sidewalk. Change the locks to the front door.

I get the impression that the teen in question is not in her home but in the apartment above. A neighbor teen so to speak.

That makes more sense. Thanks for the clarification.

She says is it NOT her kid.

To the OP:
Well, if YOU are not one to judge, why are you asking US to??
