Hey all, I posted this under house forum too but figured I may be able to get some idea's from you mom's and dad's here in parenting.
I'm getting married 6/14/08 and will be relocating. My 15 year old daughter is getting her own room and an opportunity to decorate it as she likes. She has some ideas and we've been trying to find images or ideas online. Problem is, search with terms like teen girls bedroom or something like results in a lot of porn sites popping up.. Ugghhh..
Anyway, was wondering if anyone here (particularly those with teen girls) had ideas they could share. Sites they know of or have visited that have images where she could actually see what a room would look like and pick something she likes or get a better idea of what she wants to do.
Right now she has a general idea. Baby blue walls with splattering paint in deep tone of purple, lime green and royal blue. Deep royal blue rug. Her idea is she doesn't want it looking all girly but more like having a "chill" feel to it (her exact term).
best wishes on your upcoming marriage.
please dont let her "splatter" the colors. it may sound cool to her, it will look a mess and she wont like it after all.
i think what she is saying is no pink and green, and no monocromatic adult stuff. maybe baby blue wall, maybe a neutral carpet--cause no one is going to like royal blue, but then put in colorful area rugs in funky designs--like they have at IKEA.
maybe you can incorporate those other colors she likes in the window treatments, like panels of 3 colors one after another. or you can make a kind of "tent" and her bed can be in it where she can "chill" and hide out.

you get the idea....fun shapes and colors, not baby, not adult--think college dorm
Yeah thats kinda what I was thinking with the splattering, sounds cool but will it look the way you are picturing. Unless professionally done, ehhhh not sure. lol. As for the green, she actually likes the green. It's her favorite color. Bright lime green is what I call it.
im a teen girl myself and my room is decorated with interest...cheerleading. i found alot of nice frames from Bed Bath and Beyond and i have cool little things that hang from my door from Hot Topic. i just got different things from different stores. one thing i would say is pick something you will like for awhile and not grow out of.
the (splattering wont look good) maybe spong paint different colors might look (chill) my room is bright (like me) and has LOT of pictures.
Ikea seems so square to me..i would like some ruff edges. that would look cool. also wall paper is cool..maybe if say she likes surfing maybe put something surfing like that. also i know bed bath and beyond has like (dont know the word) that hangs over your bed..its like your own space. also maybe get a chair (depending how big her room is) some kids like posters..maybe you can get that
if you want more help please feel free to ask me...i will come back and edit to the post when i find that thing that goes over your bed..its really cool i have one
My daughter is 15, and we did the sponge paint thing in her room with similar colors. She really loved it for about a year... then ended up covering every square inch of the wall with photos, magazine pics, she made some shadow boxes to put up, even her own artwork (which is amazing, btw... ) We also just relocated, and for her room here, she wants to do one entire wall i chalkboard paint, so she can change it as she wants. I personally LOVE that idea! We also let her pick a custom light fixture, which we bought at a street festival. It looks like a giant movie reel, and it has stills of about 16 different movies all around it.
What I'm mostly allowing the kids to do is cover the walls with different pics, that way, we don't have to repaint every time their interests change!
Thanks for the help Cali... my daughter loves bed, bath and beyond too. In fact her whole room right now was remodeled 3 years ago when we first moved here, all from BB&B. She got everything from clearance and is great at doing that. It's all in those colors... blue, green and purple. She still loves that color and wants to keep it that way. Like her comforter, chair and lamp. She's also into cheerleading and skateboarding so gonna toss those ideas to her as well. Thanks for your help.
jtjmom... thanks for your input as well. I like the chalkboard paint idea. She may like that too. She wanted to do one wall in a mural type way with her name grafitti like on it. I kinda have issues with the whole grafitti look though so kinda drew the line on that, but she may like that whole chalkboard paint idea if it is what I think it is. Can they actually like write on the wall and erase as they would a chalkboard? If so, think that may be kinda cool.
If she really thinks she wants paint splattered walls..try it on white butcher paper first where you can hang up a very large piece on the wall to give you and her a better idea of how it might look...or find some material to hang on the wall instead so that you are not painting and repainting.

Thats a good idea. She takes art in school and is very good. She has made a couple of splattering paint artwork and she likes it, which is where she got this concept from. I just told her that it may look good on a small sheet of paper but on a large wall it may not look the same. The idea to put up some sort of paper or something on the wall and let her experiment with that first is a great idea. Of course, all this will be done prior to installing the new carpeting, thank goodness. LOL.
