I was leaving the Y from a workout earlier today, and as I walked out the door some lady was sitting at what I guess you'd call a recruiting booth and asked me

"Have you considered fostering a child?"

I must have looked at her like she had two heads, replied "Uh...NOOO!" and walked out.

First off, I bet they werent asking the male members that question. Im 22 years old and look like Im 17. Do I LOOK like I'd want a kid?
Second, isnt that a bit of a personal question to be asking someone as they leave the Y after obviously working out?
Third, who recruits foster parents at a table?!!

Anybody else come across something like this?? It made me mad for some reason. Probably because I feel like I was targeted (for lack of a better word) simply because Im a female.

You were working out at the YMCA, a very Christian and family oriented organization, I'm not surprised at all that this happened there. You should check out their website or even their front desk and ask about their history and core beliefs, if this makes you uncomfortable, I would find another gym.

Well, the Village People had a hit record about what goes on there, which brings up one of the most supreme ironies of all time.

They play "YMCA" between innings at ballfields. Whenever it comes on, the kids typically get up and sing and dance to it, while the parents look on indulgently. Has it ever occurred to them that their kids are all singing about the merits of promiscuous gay sex in gymnasiums? I bet they've never thought of it that way.

Id never thought of it that way.

MA: Never said I knew which forum to put this in. Relationships seemed to be the better one because it had to do with fostering. Have it moved if you want.

Id never had this happen to me before..there's only one other gym in town (Gold's) and its WAAAY too expensive and too far away from my house.

Is this a Carolina thing? I was in NC for two years. I have seen these booths, though they asked other guys/girls if they liked to become foster parents.

I think they skipped me becoz I look very foreigner?

I think this topic is in the wrong place... but yes this has happened to me before as well. I was leaving Whole Foods, though, with ten-bajillion reusable canvas bags full of organic groceries... with my own two children... walking to my Volvo wagon... I guess I looked like a potential match!

They are in dire need of foster homes. I'd rather be pestered about becoming a foster parent than be panhandled by stinky bums for beer or drug money...

I dunno how this topic is in the wrong place. It's very much public relations. You thinking parenting?

I'd think parenting... Relationships would be more like questions involving dating, marriage, issues with your friends, etc. Because this has to do with foster parenting, I would think it should go in the parenting section. But that's just me.

And anything public relations it seems would go under employment?

Maybe there is something cultural happening here.... I was watching IT Crowd the other day (British show) and the manager of the IT department was called the "Relationships Manager". We don't really use that title in America... we would say "IT Manager"...

Hmmm...

Per SEI, it's called Business Relationship Manager (BRM), and it's common industry lingo to drop a few keywords.

It's about foster parenting only if it's about foster parenting.

This is about person A irritating person B. And this can't be PR coming under human resources because the Y is not the 10-storeyed corp. office
