This is insane! A felon owned the dog to begin with. Gee, I wonder why he had one? So some people decide to babysit the dog while the owner -felon- is in jail for possession of a firearm! Then the boneheads allow this dog free roam of their house. And the mother is on a med that prevents her from waking up!? WTF. You have a 4 month old baby and your meds keep you from hearing the baby cry at night!? Those better be some life or death drugs. And why didn't the guy wake up?

I think they should do a DNA test on the toes and see who's saliva it really is. Wouldn't be surprised one bit if they found human DNA rather than canine. Either way, it's about time the owners, babysitters, of the dog get punished for this kind if irresponsibility.

I am so happy that I am a light sleeper when it comes to my children. After the birth of my son, I had a c-section and they sent me home with pain med. My husband was home with me and not on pain medication. I took a med and went to sleep and woke up and the baby was crying and guess what? My husband was still snoring. I felt horrible and even though I had pain, I never took another one of those pills. I was too afraid I would sleep through the baby crying.

Parents should unterstand that when you have a small child, you cannot take medications that will put you to sleep. I was lucky, my child just woke up and cried because he was hungry - not because a dog was chewing off his toes!

That is terrible.

I swear people have no sense. There was a story on the news a month or two ago about a family dog taking a newborn out of his crib and injuring him.

We have had our family dog for almost 9 mos now. He sleeps in a gated room. I hardly think he would do something to injure the kids intentionally, but I would not want to take any chances. And I could not take something that would prevent me from waking up unless I was sure the other person would wake up. How horrible.

Something sounds really off with that story. I won't say beyond a doubt these people are just stupid but I suspect there was alcohol or drugs and a history of some neglect going on.

Yeah, I had a dumb doctor that prescribed me an anti-anxiety med way more than what he should have. I knew nothing of the medication, had never taken it or anything like it before so on day one I took it as prescribed. OMG. I was out cold most of the day and with a 4 year old running loose! From then on I only took them on an "as needed" basis and only if someone else was around to watch my son, and I told the doctor he was nuts for prescribing something like that to a single mother of a preschooler!

So yeah, when you have a kid you can't just do like you've always done. Duh!

Okay I just read the article again.

"She reportedly said she was taking medication and never heard the child cry, discovering the missing toes only when changing his diaper the next morning."

Ummm, wtf? How is this even possible? Surely there was blood all over the place, which I'd think you'd notice even before you got to the first diaper change?

And why does this seem so familiar? Oh yeah... because of this, in 2006 (but at least these people work up, I guess!?)

I would guess they're drug addicts.

There is an updated version of this story and it appears the dog that did this was merely a pup at 4 or 5 months old. Puppies have carpet knives for teeth and their chewing is relentless. How tragic this happened. And the mother didn't hear anything because she was on "medication". Okay. And what about the father?

Both of these people need to be sterilized.
