I am an unwed biological father of a beautiful baby boy that just turned two in August. I am no longer with his mother and have a very difficult time agreeing on just about anything concerning our child. At this point i've been doing research on establishing my legal rights as a parent and was wondering if anyone out there knows how much will I accrued in legal expenses if I pursue this matter through family court.....

Way too many variables to answer this quesrtion. It becomes easier to get custody orders when the other parent is willing to work with you to establish boundaries, rather than fight with you, and be forced into court hearings.

Look into some type of mediation before going straight to the court system. Ultimately a custody order will have to be filed (through the court system) for it to enable you to have your parental rights of visitation.

I know this incomplete advice, but I am not a lawyer, and you have a lot of variables, the biggest one being small differences from state to state.

The fees were about 8,000 for a friend of mine and she was friends with the lawyer and DID get a break from him.

It all depends. I would contact a lawyer and check the laws of your state. It is definitely a good thing for your son for you to make sure you get legal rights established.

Are you listed on the child's birth certificate?

Are you looking for visitation or custody?

Either one can be done pro se but visitation is far easier (basically, filling out some forms).

If your income is low enough you might be able to get free legal representation through your local legal aid program. Call your State Bar Association if you need a referral.
