Maybe you should call their Ped...and get a 'game plan' ready...
Like if and when they come down with flu like symptoms, what is the course of treatment? Will they swab them right when you bring them in and how long does that test take?? What med would they be on? How long?
We are going to vaccinate. My husband and myself are healthcare workers so we are high risk...our kids are 5.5 and 3.5. But if we were not going to...I would want a plan of action ready to go as soon as my kids were showing any signs of flu...
Danielle- it is being said that the swabs can send back false positives or negatives and that too many doctors are sending away patients WITHOUT proper antivirals who probably need them (due to the rush on ERs for antivirals due to a stuffy nose...) & that due to the time that the most accurate test takes, its too late...on & on it goes....
So much fear mongering is going on between both sides that I don't know who to believe...

All I can say is if you think you or your family members have any flu at all...Demand Tamiflu! Don't wait for the test...If your doctor won't give it to you, go to an ER.
We swab for H1N1 at our facility...never heard of the false results. But, the tests are only ran once or twice a week...
I'm in the Dallas area and live close to where the 2 kids that had no underlying conditions did that died. I live in the same exact city as one of them. One lived in Garland and the other in Ft. Worth and a teenager died over the weekend from Richardson that DID have medical issues from H1N1. We WILL be getting the H1N1 vaccine. And yes it being brand new does cause me concern. My youngest has asthma so she is high risk. I also have asthma but not near as bad as her at all and the specialist even said that I would get it. He would like for our entire family to get the vaccine just to keep exposure down for the youngest that is high risk. That can't happen as only those that are high risk can get it first. Actually the first people that will get the vaccine are government officials (if a bunch of politicians start dropping like flies in the next few weeks then we might not want to get it ). After the "important" politicians the medical facilities will be giving it to their staff. THEN it will go out to those that are high risk. The vaccine is FREE and every person that gets it will be fully documented. The facility that gives it to the patient must document who, their risk, etc and then they will keep track of anyone that has any kind of reaction to it. Because they are giving it out free then that is why they are having to strictly document to whom it was given, why, etc.
Right now anyone that is getting the flu IS GETTING the H1N1 flu. It is too early in the season for the "regular" flu to be going around. This has been told to me by more than one doctor, our specialist and the pharmacist.
The schools are being very proactive and making sure that kids that are showing any signs of illness are sent home. GOOD!!!! What this will do is keep it from spreading more than it could if the kids were all in school and sick. AND, it keeps those that are high risk from being exposed more as well. Just think of it this way. If your child is not high risk and they are not feeling great but still want to go to school and your okay with it and they just take some Tylenol and go on. Who are they exposing? Thanks if you give it to my child that IS high risk and get her sick. Or the others that are high risk or not. Just think if you did NOT send your child to school those few days and it kept about a dozen others from getting it and so on (remember it spreads and changes so the less people that get it the better). What if one of those people that got it via your child died from it? You probably would never know but still. It could have easily have been prevented. There is no need for anyone that has the flu or flu like symptoms to go into work or school at all and risk passing it on to more people. By keeping yourself and those that are sick at home and out of contact with others the spread of it CAN stop and be kept to a minimium.
As for the two children that died here from it. Both came home from school saying they did not feel well. Both went to the doctor that day. One was not given Tamiflu (the 14 year old in Ft. Worth) as the doctor said she was not high risk. In a days time she was worse and they took her to the hospital. She died the next day. My own 14 year old heard this story and I told her this is WHY I want her to tell me if she is not feeling the least bit well. The 11 year old that died that lived in Garland and attended Mesquite ISD schools came home sick. Went to the doctor that day and I believe she did get given antibiotics. She became lethargic a day or two later and they took her to the hospital. From what I remember it was then she developed pneumonia possibly (this has not been confirmed and was ONLY speculation) and died the next day. It happened very fast for both of them. Neither of them had any other medical conditions that would make them high risk. The teenager that died this past weekend lived in Richardson and was a student at one of the local high schools in the special ed program. She did not have contact with hardly any other students and they released she had massive heart problems from her condition since she was a baby. She had not been in school since sometime around Sept. 8.

Danielle, have you taken Tamiflu? If so, what side effects did you experience?
My sister recently took Tamiflu and the side effects were so bad, she stopped. She experienced nausea, vomiting, and terrible headaches. She discontinued taking it after 4 days (was supposed to take it for 10). She was using it as a preventative and says it was awful.

I don't know what to think about Tamiflu????
I took it last year when I had the flu and had no side effects from it at all.
Why was she taking it as a preventative? It isn't really a prevention at all. No wonder they are running out of it now.............. Around here there is a shortage of it especially for children. They have been grinding up the adult strength tablets to make some for kids.

Her kids tested positive and they started her on it. It's absolutely used as a preventative if exposed to the virus. Plus, for those already sick, Tamiflu only works if taken 48 hours after onset of symptoms.
Thousands of people every year die from the "regular" flu too. I'm no more concerned about H1N1 than I am about any other flu. I don't get the flu vaccine, I never have, and I never will unless I get to the point where my immune system needs the help. I think as a general rule, people are far too paranoid about H1N1.

The interview that I saw in regards to the 14 yr old girl that died said she got sick early in the week, went to the doctor on Weds, he didn't prescribe an antiviral because of CDC recommendations and that her mother took her to the hospital on Sunday but by then it was to late.

She went to the hospital on Saturday is what has been reported here locally.

I've heard of it being given if everyone else in the house has the flu. Don't know if that really works for sure.
Yes, you have to take Tamiflu w/in 48 hours of symptoms.
It sounds more like your sister came down w/ the flu than a side effect of the Tamiflu she was taking.
