I think the dad who killed his son did it for the insurance money; that in itself is horrible beyond words, but there's something about using candy, of all things, to do such a thing that makes it even worse (if worse could be possible).

My question is....did all your parents "check" multiple candy bars by eating them to ensure their safety like mine did? It always seem to be their favorite bars...and they always knew were to trick or treat to get them......hmmm?? I always thought..."Why do they have to check it from the same houses every year...all those old people seem pretty nice and they know Mom's and Dad's names?" I wonder if this is a bigger "conspiracy." Also, is this checking system "inherited?" lol.

It is....really Becky. Honestly I don't think my parents checked anything but then again we never got to go Trick or Treating anywhere but my Grandparents.
So.... I take a slight advantage of the situation. All Tootsie Rolls are suspicious and I HAVE to inspect them then SAVE my children from the terrible menace by eating them All.
And Three Musketeers bars too.

Well, people may not be poisoning children, but there are still some disgusting things people do sometimes.

My neighbors kids (all teens) got in trouble for peeing on the treats they were passing out. At the school I do contract work for I would hear some of the kids tell how they would lick candy and wrap it back up. Just idiots.

When I used to visit my dad, those kids did some horrible things to candy.

When my kids where trick or treating, we did it in the mall. You got mostly stickers and balloons. We bought our own candy to eat. Once they got a little older, we give parties.

I guess it just depends on your experiences. Everybody is not nice, even in great neighborhoods!

My kids last year chose to make their own candy and make a spoke trial in the woods they would follow to find the candy in little brown paper bags. Daddy tried to scare them with a change saw but even the two year old laughed at him. This year, making a paper mache pinata and filling it full of our candy is what we're thinking. Guess I'd better get started on that now, lol.

You do realize that can happen anywhere? In any restaurant or any store? It is gross no doubt but the slim chance that you might get some weirdos isn't going to stop us from doing fun stuff. I remember a friend of mine in high school telling me that he used to pee in the batter used to make funnel cakes. I don't know if he was telling the truth or not but it is always a possibility.

Trick or treating is fortunately alive and well in my neighborhood. We literally get over a hundred trick or treaters easily. That doesn't even include the hour noone is at the house while I am trick or treating with my son! People come from all over to trick or treat in my neighborhood.

I would be THRILLED to get some homeade treats! Popcorn balls sound SO yummy!!

I decided to make popcorn balls for my Girl Scout Troop this year. I think everyone will like them. I have bagged candy to pass out at home though.

It would be nice if you could give out homemade stuff simply because the cost of candy has skyrocketed! We went to buy some today and the price is crazy, especially now money is tight.

As far as it being a myth, every year some nut job would poison candy or an apple where I was growing up and you'd hear about it on the news.

It is a shame that this urban myth has nearly destroyed a great tradition. Trick-or-treating was a BLAST many years ago. Now it is just another great tradition nearly gone by the wayside due to over-protective, scaredy cat parents who will believe any urban myth they hear.
Very true, there are more reported cases of tainted aspirin or Tylenol than candy on Halloween. Yet people don't freak out about that.

Never said it couldn't, but the post was about trick or treating.

Never said to stop. We have a ball on Halloween.

I don't do homemade. I don't even do pot luck! Some people are just not clean. Since I don't know which, I try to avoid other's people food! Never said to stop trick or treating. Even though it can happen anywhere, this post was about halloween.
