If your son and all or most of his friends are gay, Sweet 16 is probably fine. If not, just call it a birthday party. If you want to give it a name, maybe Extreme, or one of the other words kids love to use. Just not Sweet. IF you have to tie tit to Sweet, then include "The" at the beginning and play Ballroom Blitz all night. Still he may get ridiculed, but at least the party will not be lame. DO NOT play My pretty Pony movies for the entertainment (unless he and his buds are Bronies - in which case, you can probably call the party sweet). I guess it really depends on what your son is like. Is he gay or straight, is he a bronie? Is he an athlete? Is he a dweeb? Anime club? Band? What kind of music does he like? If he is into screamo and you plan the party around dubstep, it is not going to go well. Does he smoke pot? The terminology should coordinate with his personality and most important not embarrass him.

It may look like a place for younger kids, but he went with a teen youth group one night and they loved it. College groups even rent it out.

It will be a night time party and he can put together a play list on his IPOD, they turn down the lights, hand out glow necklaces, blast the music and it's like a bouncehouse nightclub.

They have invites, but I want to give the event a name. "Sweet" as in Napoleon Dynamite is one option, but I don't think it will come off in print and that is a pretty old movie, so he would probably not go for it.

Maybe some play on the words Pump It Up....

Ideas?

He'll be inviting his whole class and about ten others and teen events tend to grow in numbers once the word gets out. I was thinking of having a doorman check the guest list (and required waivers) at the door. Make it like a nightclub, with the "list". Would teens consider this stupid? My fear is that the invite will become viral through his Facebook and too many will show up. It will be RSVP, but you know how that goes.....

More ideas?!

Thanks!
Here's a novel idea. Ask him what he wants to call it. In fact, let him plan the entire thing. If you call it Sweet Sixteen, he'll never live it down.

When I hear House of Pain in relation to a place where kids jump around in the dark with glow necklaces all I can think of is kids getting hurt. What keeps these kids from bashing into each other, a simple glow necklace?

It's really hard to gauge what kinds of popular trends/bands/sayings are ok with a teen's friends, so I think it's safer to just have the party and not try to make it sound funny or hip. If you miss on the name, it will either sound corny or childish. But the party is a great idea. Just realize you're dealing with a very fragile age when it comes to looking uncool.
