My daughter wanted a Barbiew dream house for Christmas, but she just turned 4 and I thought she was too young. We bought her the nice Pottery Barn house instead but I can sense she was dissapointed. Interested in what people think is the appropriate age for girls to start playing with barbies. Seems like she should atleast be 6 older. Thought!

When I was four, I think I played with my elder sister's old Barbies, who all had buzz haircuts and were missing limbs by that point. But, yeah, it wasn't until I was six or so that I acquired any brand new, fresh Barbies to mutilate all by myself. Muahahaa.

Why do think it inappropriate for a 4 year old? That's odd.

My daughter didnt like Barbies but those doggone Bratz dolls - who look like strippers and streetwalkers. I despised them. But im not 4 and she was and let me tell you she was obsessed with them from 4 until she was about 6. It was all she wanted. She stopped being obsessed at 6 and stopped playing with them at about 8. We finally gave them away in the dozens last week.

So she got them first at 4. Bigger fish to fry -and youre only a kid once.

Our 4yo also wanted Barbies for Christmas. Since her birthday is in the spring, we declined to give in. Instead we got her more My Little Ponies and a Breyer Horse and stable. She LOVES it and is actually playing with them together. I was worried that she wouldn't be able to dress the Barbies on her own. However, some of her friends got Barbies for Christmas and they LOVE them. I honestly think this was a hard age to buy for!

My 4 yo got a princess doll that looks a lot like a barbie. I do not see anything wrong with it. A barbie dream house is another thing. I am sure it is not cheap and I refuse to buy any toys with small pieces until she gets better at taking care of them. For me barbie is fine tiny barbie accessory no a chance. You are the parent and you should chose her toys however you see fit. Don't worry about her not getting what she wanted. It is healthy for kids not to get all their whims catered to. It prepares them for real life.

I wouldn't be worried at age four. That seems appropriate. At least she wants Barbie and not those awful Bratz. I agree with Stillthesame's opinions on those; they certainly make Barbie look tame by comparison. I don't have a little girl, though, so haven't had to deal with those issues personally yet. Some Barbies are more appropriate than others, so maybe you'll be able to find something that makes you both happy.

4 is pretty much prime time for wanting Barbies. I don't see what the problem is.

My daughter got her first Barbies at age 3...she was interested in her older cousin's dolls.

The age group of Barbies has changed since I was a kid. I got my first one for Christmas in Kindergarten, and I know I played with mine until at least 12, but from what I understand, girls now tire of them by 8 or so.
