I always give a gift bag with a bunch of 'Little Golden Books' in them for mom or dad to read to them.

There are also little books that are a padded plastic type they can even chew on.

Or a popular book like Peter Rabbit with a stuffed animal of Peter Rabbit to go with it.

She's one year old. She doesn't care.

Get something the parents can use. Maybe diapers. Not 'sexy' but practical.

I don't know if they still make it, but my oldest daughter got a Fisher Price "Tea Set" when she was a year old. It was her favorite toy, and she played with it for years. It had large, uncomplicated toddler-friendly pieces (spoons, plates, etc.) made of unbreakable plastic. I added the other cool Fisher Price toy foods to the tea party - large unbreakable toy cookies, cupcakes and ice cream scoops with colorful "toppings" that could be interchanged. I don't know if they still make those either, but they sure were fun and we loved playing with them (sitting on those little chairs was murder on my back, LOL). It instilled some table manners in her too, at that young age.

I agree with some on the other posters. The little girl will have just as much fun with a doll or the box it will come in. Books are always a great idea.

Several great ideas already posted.

Something I usually do for a young one is, go down the baby toy aisle and look on the packaging for ages. Some will say 6 months + some will say 1yr.+ some will say 3yrs. +, ...etc. I grab a toy that is age appropriate and wrap it up. At that young of age, kids really do not care what kind of present they get and buying age appropriate toys you know that the toy is designed with that age in mind so there will be no small parts they can break off and choke on or things that will hurt them in anyway.

Most of these toys will have some sort of educational value if you want to get something educational.

For kids that young I do not always buy clothes unless I really know the true size of the kid. From experience with my own kids I didn't buy them a lot of stuffed animals or dolls at that age as they had no interest in them. They prefered toys that rolled around, or they could push, or flashed lights and made sounds.
