I think they just show they are strong and experienced, and also, show they get through many many things, the purpose is that set an example to children.
it's good,but not honest.
will you tell your children"Baby,I can't walk half mile in the snow?"
To me the statement always translated to, "my life was hard, you don't know how good you have it". In my own life with my own kids, they watched my struggles as a single parent and know now how difficult life can be. My lowest point being when they were small, I was fairly newly divorced and got a car repossessed and having a break down in front of them, just sitting on the floor crying - they just sat with me quietly as if they understood my pain.
I think them having seen things like this in my life helped them to be better in theirs.
This reminds me of an 1885 cover of Good Housekeeping I saw - it was telling women they shouldn't compare themselves to their grandmothers since there is so much more to do now! Nothing ever changes!
good post,I could be wrong but I think it builds character, you don't know when you've got it good if there aren't some struggles, sorry though you went thru that as a single Mom.

Explaining to our 13-year-old that she doesn't NEED a cell phone, her father and I did just fine without cell phones, that there used to be a time when NOBODY had cell phones and we all survived ...

You're not wrong at all. Struggles, hard times, death, all of those things do help to build character. Obviously Im in a much better place now but I do believe that even though there were really tough times, without them I may be a different person and not a good one.

That was a great reminder, Sierra!
