I'm not done reading all the responses yet, but I'm really glad someone started this thread. There is some very good advice here and unfortunately some very sad stories. My son is 9 and he is ADD, OCD, and the doctors are still unsure as to Asbergers/Autism. He's a well behaved kid and very quiet, doesn't have any friends. He hasn't had too many problems yet in elementary school from what I've seen and heard, but I'm very worried about him when he goes to junior high and high school. I'm looking forward to reading more posts here for advice. I know I won't tolerate it, I can't tolerate it, we have enough on our plate just getting through each day.
It such a shame they us parents have to even deal with this kind of stuff!

If this was my kid, the bully would be the one doing the paying. If it was not serious, I would speak to the parents or the principal if it happened on school grounds. They had better listen too because I would be like a wart on their rear end if things were not resolved to my satisfaction.
This incident sounds like a case of assault and battery. I would have made 2 stops that day. The first would be to the police station to file criminal charges. The second would be to my lawyer to file a lawsuit.
No one messes with my child or they will rue the day for a long time.
I plan to have my son trained in either boxing or martial arts. Perhaps both. And like others, he will be told to never start any crap, but also not take an excessive amount either. I stress excessive as I also do want him to learn not to sweat the small things and not to treat every slight as a major provocation.
Sad to say, but we live in ever more agressive times and every school has its share of bullies. There simply comes a time when a man has to stand up for himself just as there are times when he can walk away. So along with the defense skills, I want him to have a sense of balance in his interactions with others.

Really? I would tell this principal that my child WILL be defending themselves if necessary. I would also not hesitate to get the police involved, the Superintendant of Schools, the mayor, anyone who will listen. With my child I have ZERO tolerance.
Now I need to calm down.
This is one of the reasons I am planning to homeschool
I applaud the individual who beat up the bullies even though it resulted in a suspension. The school treated you unjustly but I admire the way you fought back.
If I had come home from elementary school whining about being bullied, and my dad found out that the kid doing the bullying was smaller than me, I would have been in a world of s--- for allowing it to happen.
Someone needs to tell your kid that one Tyson-style blow to the dome will keep that little turd from ever looking at him again.
I was one of those bullied kids who every once and a while fought back. All that got me was a hysterical hen of a teacher threatening to call the PD and tons of warnings/suspensions.
One gym teacher said it best: "We always catch the retalilator". Menaing, if you do something about your bullying, expect to catch **** for it. And then people wonder why society has gone to hell.
It is sad to know when we send our kids off to school , that they are not totally safe, there are some that have to defend themselves against their peers. My daughter has gone through it for a bit, they pick on kids who are too pretty, too smart, too rich, too poor and too fat.It goes on and on.They have programs in school to teach our children not to do drugs and or have sex.Why isn't there more programs about bullying and the effects it does have on the person taking it everyday?
I'd hazard to guess that is the parents job to teach their kids not to be bullies. The school's job is to protect them and enforce rules that sponsor a safe environment.
There's a real fine line on having your child learn boxing or martial arts and having to worry that maybe they will become the bully instead of the bullied.
I might bring to light that there are martial arts classes that teach "Defense" only. Give your child a chance.
Karate is great for kids self confidence. My son is small for his age and he loves it. Once the kids find out he takes karate, he is generally left alone.
Even though the discipline says it is to be used for self defense only. Great for kids concentration skills too.
If your son (and daughter!) is being bullied sign them up for a martial art class.
