If a daycare provides before/after care, they're going to provide full-time care during the summer, on snow days, and school holidays like spring break. The also typically provide transportation to and from the school.
There are plenty of individuals or day cares who will be available during the summer school vacation months. It is actually easier when the kids are younger.....once they become teens and want to stay home alone....the real fun begins.
I read in a parenting magazine a few years ago (I think it was called Wonder Years Magazine but I'm not sure... it was in a doctor's office...) about a group of working parents that got together and set-up a summer camp among themselves for all their kids. One parent took Mondays, another Tuesdays, another Wednesdays, and two of the parents couldn't take a whole weekday off so they divided a day and each took a half a day. On their days, the kids would go to their home and they would be in charge of the summer camp. In the article the parents said they each agreed to take on one teachable topic area - the Monday parent focused on activities involving exploring nature, the Tuesday parents focus was reading and writing, the Wednesday parents focus was art, and so on. This sounded so cool to me! I'm a SAHM so we don't have to worry about summer day care, but if we did I think I'd try to do something like this.
Oh and it also mentioned that all the families involved became members of their local pools, zoo, aquariums, and science place centers so that they could go to those places all summer long without having to worry about cost of tickets and so on.

I agree. The early teen years are the worst. They are to old for some camps but it's hard to leave them home all day every day.
