It's not about sticking the car three feet away from the curb. It's about being next to the curb, but pulling the front end an extra couple of inches, leave the wheels turned a bit. The car is not in any additional danger, but it looks like it is further into the street than it really is. It's an optical illusion that gives the object a wider profile, causing the drivers to reassess their clearance, something they usually slow down to do.
Of course, if you don't think it is worth the risk, then don't do it, but it is one of the few ways a citizen on the street can help to control the traffic without any expense, petitions, cops, tickets, or confrontations.
ya, I actually found out accidentally that having a car parked on the street, at the curb, completely legal, does slow people down. Especially if there is one on each side of the street. Narrow streets make people slow down.

Why not just call the police? Not everyone wants to park on the street, if they have a garage. Your method is fairly confrontative, too. And your neighbors know exactly who is doing it, unlike calling the cops, which is between you and the cop.
and two wrongs don't make a right ( dumping nails on a public street/road, citizens installing their own home made speed bumps on a public road/street.
Surprised someone hasn't suggested taking a shot gun and shooting the speeders.
Many of the suggestions here are down right laughable .
As was mentioned, if it's really bad, see if you can get your city on board with doing the traffic bumps (which I personally hate) or better yet, a traffic circle. Quite a few streets here have them. I think this is probably your own really feasible possiblity.

I never said that. YOU said to keep the kids out of the street. I pointed out that speeders can, and have caused accidents that could hurt people in their own front yards. Yes, many of the suggestions in this thread are ridiculous, but I haven't made them. you should read the whole thread, and/or pay attention to who said what before you criticize my post.

If that's what you want to do, then do it. But the police can't always be there, and the police can't always catch a speeder, and the police often have more important things to take care of.
You don't think calling the police is confrontational? Sure, it may not be you with the confrontation, but there definitely is a confrontation involved.
This is an option. If it's not for you, don't do it. If the speeders aren't important enough to even try this option, then I guess they aren't important enough.
Personally I think people should try to solve the problems in their neighborhood on their own before calling strangers with guns and tasers on their neighbors. But that's just me.

give me a break. "strangers with guns and tasers?" Law enforcement is their job. ticketing unsafe drivers is what our taxes pay for them to do. I certainly don't personally know every person who drives fast in front of my house. I sure has heck am not going to confront them about it, or throw something in the street to slow them down. I have observed that parking a car in the street slows people down, but I have never done it purposely for that reason. Actually, it doesn't seem confrontational. It seems passive-aggressive.

Do you know your cops personally? Most likely not. I'm on the Citizen's Patrol and I only know one or two by name.
Law enforcement is their job, I agree. And part of that job is to use force and violence.
Do what you will. But I made a suggestion that avoids even indirect threats of violence and is present more often than police.
I will say it again. Do what you think is right. This is an *option*. If you feel calling cops on your neighbors is a-okay, then do it. But don't deny it's not a threat of force. Just admit you're okay doing that to your neighbors. Most people are.
