Putting on t-shirts and pull-on shorts? Threeish. Dealing with snaps, buttons, zippers, etc? By kindergarten, I think. Even five-year-olds might need help occasionally with certain items.
if your child is going to be in preschool start with all of the above by 3---most teachers do not expect a child to do laces or INTRICATE buttons at that time---but al least teach them to pull down their pants/huggies before school starts---by 4 99% of kids CAN do this(a preschool aide volunteer)
My daughter is 3 and routinely picks out her outfits and puts them on herself. They don't always match, and sometimes they are on backwards, but she does a pretty good job.
My niece started dressing herself when she was about two. She had quite a flair for style and liked a LOT of color. When she was in kindergarten she would come downstairs in the most outrageous get-ups and happily get on the school bus all decked out in whatever she put on that morning.
I admired my sister for not batting an eye and allowing that sweet little thing to display her taste in clothes. Out of the four kids, she was the only one who dressed herself in all that glory, but as an adult, she is the only one who has struck out on her own and has become more successful than the other three (They're doing well, but more conservatively)
My almost 4 year old has been able to dress herself for about a year (almost 2 years for pants with an elastic waist). However, I occasionally have to "help things along" during the rush to get out the door on weekday mornings (after she has picked out the outfit). She only recently figured out how to zip up her jacket all by herself (I used to have to get it started then have her zip it up).
She chooses some really interesting outfits, which is fine as long as they are appropriate for the weather (i.e. no tank top and shorts when it's 40 degrees outside). Today is was purple pants, neon green shirt, Halloween socks with pumpkins, and pink shoes. lol
OK. I think we have a little catching up to do. I, like a lot of parents probably, kept dressing my kid because it was easy and faster. But I know doing everything for them is doing them any favors, so I guess if it takes longer, it just has to take longer.

i am with you on that! most days i do it cause i just dont have that kind of time in the morning. but that just leads him to telling me "i dont know how" when we DO have the time. so i remind him that he does and so he tries.
