Seriously looking at moving to New Castle from FL (no, I'm not crazy - I've lived here my entire life so besides looking to start a new chapter, I absolutely
can't stand the 11 months of heat and humidity. And if you don't like the beach, which I"m 3 miles from, it has nothing to offer, is 10 years behind the other major cities and it takes 5 hours just to drive out of the state. Plus the friggin hurricanes and all the associated local media frenzy). It appears it's going through a sort of re-birth. Very close to Pittsburgh and 13 miles to major shopping in Ohio. Housing is crazy cheap, with amazing old houses going from the mid $20's to $60's, depending if the inside has been totally modernized or not. I hear they're building a $300 million dollar casino jusst outside, with major job opportunities and it's NOT run by indians.

Anyone have thoughts, comments or knowledge? I've been told to try to stay within 16105 area code, other than that, not much else. Also working with a realtor who is really helpful.

New Castle isn't that bad of an area, I live just north of it in the Sharon area, also not that bad. The entire area of western PA, from Pittsburgh north to Erie, is just finally starting to turn around after the collapse of the US Steel industry. However, there still are plenty of sore spots. And yes, housing is ridiculously cheap in this area of the country. Here are just a few pictures of homes for sale in Sharon and Sharpsville, just north of New Castle. There a plenty of homes for sale in this area of the country. Many are in pristine condition, others just need a little tlc. Western PA will have 3 casino's, the one in Erie is the only one in operation as of right now. Pittsburgh's is slow coming, yet under construction, and I don't believe they've even broken ground on the one in New Castle yet.

I wouldn't limit your search area to just New Castle. Western Pennsylvania is beautiful, with rolling hills, small mountains and a great fall season. There's plenty of great small towns and small cities, as well as two moderate sized cities in Erie and Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is a real gem if you've never been to. Peace, and good luck.

I agree with dugdogmaster..........lots of small towns with low housing costs and very low crime.

Yes, the Niles and Boardman, OH areas for shopping aren't that far from New Castle, but there's some cool places close by in PA too. The Prime Outlets are in near by Grove City, PA(and it's one of the largest outlets), easy to get to from New Castle too. And Robinson Twp(basically an entire town of shopping), a suburb of Pittsburgh, is only about 45 minutes from New Castle down Toll Rt 60. It's a buck fifty each way, and that's also the way to the international airport. And then you have Pittsburgh itself. First, it's one hell of a city. Secondly, shopping everywhere. You'd get more responses if you post on the Pittsburgh subforum, if you're serious about moving to the area.

Question, if you don't mind. How did you even hear about New Castle, PA living all the way down in Florida?

Well, I'm retardedly doing my home search backwards. I want an "old" house, so I started on Ebay Real Estate, and that's how I found both New Castle AND
Ellwood City. Mom's from Pittsburgh, altho she thinks I'm a fool to move up somewhere I've got no friends or relatives and have really never been in winter snow. The housing market has TANKED down here, my film production job stopped in May, so I've been 'on the dole' since then, and I'm loosing my ass (sorry moderator - hope that's allowed). I've been dreaming for the last several years of selling my home and buying an old house, CASH, with my equity. It's MY idea, at 48, of retirement. I have a huge medical background, as well as many other skills and abilities, so I don't feel finding a job, or 2, would be hard. With no mortgage to pay, no car payment , it should be easy. Hell, I can always work at one of the home improvement stores, a casino or retail. And, being that close to NY, NJ, and MI, they all have bustling film production going on - and I can travel. Bottom line is, I'm not worried.

Love to hear the groups thoughts on my 'dream'. I think it makes sense. Especially now, before I become a foreclosure number as well. Just hope there's decent men up there - lol!

PS: any idea how much the houses you showed are going for? I'm hitting realtor.com now, but may have to run out.

If you had to pick, which is better, crime, things to do, cultural diversity, etc.: Sharon or New Castle?????

Hi there,

I actually grew up in New Castle, PA and live just over the state line in Ohio now. Based on what you are looking for, New Castle does not sound like a bad choice for you. Between New Castle and Sharon-Sharon itself has a little more to offer than New Castle, (as far as restaurants and shopping go) but then it's a little farther away from Pittsburgh and Boardman, OH.

If you are considering the Sharon PA area as well-you may want to check out Hermitage. I don't know much about the housing market in Hermitage, but from what I've seen, it's much nicer than a lot of the areas in Sharon.
