I've looked at houses along Main Street and have really liked Manheim, but haven't found the right house. Traveling off Main Street, how is the neighborhood to the South of the Railroad tracks and West of Main street? I have not driven through yet, changes in plans kept me from going this weekend, but I am interested in what others have to say about the area.

Having lived in Manheim most of my life I can tell you that I wouldn't live there. Manheim for its size isn't a big crime filled town, however in the area where you are talking about, it tends to be lower end... Not saying anything is wrong with it, but as I have said I have lived in the town most of my life and being in public safety you sorta kinda get a spidey sense of what areas to avoid.....

Thanks 91004. Is the area just lower income? Or is it an area where you'd have to worry about drug deals next door and your car being broken into? Where I live now would probably be considered a lower middle class neighborhood. Some hardworking families, but the kind that work blue collar jobs or maybe middle management. I know many of my neighbors smoke pot (I can smell it when I go for walks), but most are nosy as hell and for the most part I feel my stuff is safe. I've only recently began locking my car at night as the area seems to be declining with the economy.

Your best bet is to contact the Police Chief Barry Weidman at 717-665-2481 for crime statistics as I don't live in the area any longer. I'm not trying to scare you away from that end of town. Shootings, stabbings, etc very rarely occur in Manheim. The last time someone was shot was I believe 3 years ago, and that was a business owner that shot a would be burglar dead at the intersection of Penn and Stiegel Street. The burglar didn't make it and his accomplices took off. Problem solved.

Now ask me the best places to eat and I have to say Rettew's Twin Kiss tops my list, followed by A&M Pizza on Market Square, The Cats Meow 200 Block South Charlotte Street, and Joboy's the 1st block of South Main Street [http://www.joboysbrewpub.com/] ....... Best place to shop on Tuesday's is Root's Country Market, about 1/2 way between Manheim and East Petersburg, very cheap and the sandwiches from Raub's Subs at Roots are the best!!

Ah, someone else who's directions are based on where to eat! LOL!

I'll continue to look into info on that end of town and hopefully someone local can chime in as well. It would be a temporary move and I'd plan on selling the place in about 5 years and getting something with some land. Should be established in a career by then.
