Hello,

Can anyone suggest some family oriented ski resorts that are within 3 hours drive of NYC, has a good amount of green and blue trails and does not have very long lines?

We're a family of beginner/intermediate skiers with two (7 and 9 year old) kids so black diamond trails are not important to us. Thanks.

I have to chime in here to say the above post is off the mark on many points. Blue Knob is more than five hours from NYC, it is not known for having easy (green and blue) trails, and it only has good skiing when it gets a lot of natural snowfall, which is not the case so far this season. Nor does the extended weather forecast look promising.

Stock to the areas is the eastern part of the state (Blue Knob is in the west-central part), such as Jack Frost and Shawnee Mt. Both are known as being family friendly and have easy -- green and blue -- runs. Avoid Camelback and Blue Mountain, because of the enormous weekend crowds, and mostly steeper runs. Sno Mountain falls in between these two groupings.

Location map here: PSAA

PS: There's also Mt Peter Ski Area, near Warwick, NY (near Newburgh, NY). Roughly similar to Jack Frost, with slightly less vertical.

all good places mentioned, except for blue knob as explained. however, you are asking for the impossible. everyone from new york and north jersey is looking for the same thing, which means no matter where you go, you're gonna get crowds...

I was up at Greek Peak between Christmas & New Year's and was surprised at fairly short lines despite a full parking lot. That's 4 or + hr from NYC though, and it misses being actually in PA by that extra hour or so too.

^ Greek Peak does have a reputation for no crowds. But the tradeoff if one were to drive there from NYC, one would be driving past even bigger (in # of trails and in vertical drop, than GP and anything in PA) ski areas in the southern Catskills, such as Hunter, Bellayre, and Wyndham.

Of these three, Wyndham in particular is geared to families and does not have have a lot of steep/challenging trails. So I'd say consider Wyndham before GP.

Thank you so much for all your helpful suggestions. With the large amount of snow we've gotten this winter, it should make for a great skiing season...even for a family of beginners like us
