To make this quick, I love reading this site, very helpful and wonderful people. My girlfriend and I want to relocate from Albany NY. She really wants to move to Philly, which I'm open to but know nothing about. What I would like to do is move to a safe area, that is close to parks and outdoor activities and also isn't too far of a drive to the city life. We are very outdoor people, we currently have one dog that must get a lot of exercise, and are planning on starting a family within the next year. If anyone has any suggestions of place to live that would be greatly appreciated. We are looking to buy a home, but that is not a priority just yet. Mainly we just need info so we can continue to investigate what Philly has to offer. Thanks everyone for your help and have a happy holiday..

Christoph

well the 3 best areas in my opinion are: 1) havertown, great family oriented area, nice homes, about 20 minutes to philly. 2) newtown square, another great family area and the lowest taxes around. 3) radnor pricey!! but the best schools and safest areas.
There are some nice areas in montgomery county west of philly also some good areas in chester cty south and west of philly.

The Wissahickon Valley might be the best outdoors recreation area here in Philly. They have a 15 mile long waterfront biketrail from Chestnut Hill down into Center City. Miles and miles of hiking trails.

Its in the NW part of Philadelphia but is easily accessible from MOntgomery County.

Neighborhoods to recommend in this area:

Chestnut Hill(maybe the best neighborhood in Philadelphia)
Mt. Airy
Roxborough
Andorra
Lafayette Hill(Montgomery County)
Springfield Township-Flourtown(Montgomery Co)

The second best area is out in the suburbs. Ridley Creek State Park. Its about 12 miles west of center city in Gradyville ( Delaware County)
50 miles of hiking trails, Paved bike trail. Stocked trout stream with a fly fishing only section.

Recommended towns to live:

West Chester
Media
Newtown Square
Edgmont

I would say Chestnut Hill/West Mt. Airy. Lots of parks and easy access to center city either by car or train.
