What I did not know is that there are many towns like Centralia in the world. In fact, there is another one right here in PA.

There are actually many coal mine fires burning all over the world. One I know of up in the Yukon near the Alaska border has apparently been going for over a 1000 years.

Another one I know of near where I used to live in Colorado has been going since the 1920s.

It's not an uncommon thing around the world. Just that often it doesn't affect population centers like it did with Centralia.

And wasn't there a town called Byrnesville right next to Centralia that was also completely destroyed by the mine fire? That's the closest thing to Hell that I'll ever see (unless you're talking about North Korea )

Byrnesville is (was?) just south of Centralia. The road to Byrnesville is the road leading off the present-day PA-61 bypass. It was a planned community of sorts, more of a village than a town. Byrnesville had a few collieries of its own, which IIRC tap into both the Buck Mountain and Mammoth veins.

Note that there are a lot of exposed mine entrances and airshafts in the area. If you fall into one, you are dead. Period. Even if you survive the fall down the 70-degree slope, the gases from the fire will suffocate you before you can even yell for help. Stomping around can be deadly.

We were there this weekend after seeing a documentary about it. it is quite an experience to see what is left of the town. There are streets...one house...otherwise...nothing but a strange silence....our heart aches for the people of Centralia and for those who tried to save it.
