two retirees from northwestern PA are interested in relocating to south-central PA. Most of the info we have found focuses on younger families' needs. We would like some input on the best areas for retirees (other than on-site retirement complexes). We are somewhat interested in Shrewsbury, for example. Does the entire town's activity revolve around commuting to Maryland or is there Life there?? Are there more interesting communities than Shrewsbury to check out??

I don't know much about Shrewsbury. I live in Mechanicsburg, which is home to lots of retired people. Bethany Village has built a huge and very nice retirement complex near my house. The local area is quiet, with activities centered around families with school-age children, however access to other areas with more to do is pretty easy. I've been to Shrewsbury a few times. It's pretty sleepy there. You don't want to live somewhere that requires you to use I-83 to getout of town. I-83 is a nightmare ! I never drive the road anymore.

Lancaster County has some very nice 55+ Active Adult Communities. They are not retirement homes, just adult communities with walking trails, sometimes a community center and neighborhood events. One in Lebanon County has a stocked pond for fishing and boating - but I hear they have just about sold out every lot. There is a new one starting in Strasburg, Lancaster County. Most prices in these areas - all new construction - are starting at about $200K.
