My husband is interesting in transferring to his company's Newark, Delaware offices. We have been looking at various places in Chester County -Malvern, Downingtown, Wayne. We were urged by a resident of the area to check out Chadds Ford. Anybody out there have some information to share? We have heard that the schools are great - a concern since we have a child going into second grade. We are looking for a townhouse that costs no more than 325,000-340,000. We would like to be near a Reform synagogue, parks, shopping and the such.

We lived near Chadds Ford. It's a nice area but has gotten quite congested over the last several years. I would suggest staying on the West side of route 202 if possible, closer to Kennett Square so your husband can take the back roads straight down to Newark. Malvern and Wayne are pretty far up and the commute is not going to be a good one. Downingtown is bit better but still a little north. Kennett Square, PA - Historic Kennett Square BTW, Newark is my husbands hometown.

Not sure if it's reform, but there's a synogogue right on route 100, just north of the Downington exit of the PA Turnpike. I'm sure there is a synogogue closer to Chadds Ford. If you are coming from Long Island, you're not going to think that CF is congested.

Malvern and especially Wayne are Main Line communities, and not as close to Newark.

Just read your post about Chadds Ford (after I replied to your other). There are townhouses possibly in that price range in Knolls of Birmingham. Those residents attend Chadds Ford Elementary which is a great elementary school in the U-CHadds School district. My son is also going into second grade and attends CFE. The other townhouse neighborhood is the Toll Bros. near Pocopson E. Not sure of the price range. Birmingham Hunt are single family homes and is next to the townhouses of Knolls of Birmingham. Lots of CFE kids! I think you will love Chadds Ford. Not sure who said it was congested but we have lived in a lot of places and Chadds Ford is not crowded. Lots of land, houses far apart and great families. 202 is definitely congested at different times of the day but that's one road, not the whole area.
Good Luck in your search!

Smile moving from Maryland to West Chester area

I a thinikng about moving from the Rockville Md area back to Philly. I am interetested in a neo traditional community with a nice mix of age groups. I like the picket fence look!!! Also would like a syangogue in the area. I would like either a small house on the newer side, or a townhouse.

Any ideas about where I should look to live in that area? I have looked at Windsor Ridge and liked that. I want to spend between 325,000 and 350,000.

ANy suggestions are welcomed. I am an attorney and would start my own practice in the area I move to.

Also check out Weatherstone (by the Hankin Group). It's right near the synagogue I mentioned in a previous post on this thread.

The synagogue referenced on Route 100 is a conservative synagogue. The closest reform temple in the area is Beth Chaim on Route 401 in Malvern (just north of 202). Visit Beth Chaim Reform Congregation — Beth Chaim Reform Congregation for more info.

I think Chadds Ford is lovely and don't find the traffic to be an issue. I live in Chester Springs (in Weatherstone) but have friends in Chadds Ford. All of Chester County has traffic issues - but then all of Philadelphia does! The countryside and homes in Chadds Ford are lovely - a bit expensive, but it was our second choice when we moved to Chester County a few years ago.

I prefer Chester County over Delaware or Buck's County. Just my preference. I work in Delaware County so we looked at homes in this area, but they were either out of my price range or on a main road, or just too small. Love the Main Line, but found that Chester Springs gave me the value and quality of home we were looking for at the time.

But again, I say Chadds Ford over Kennett Square any time. West Chester is very, very nice too. Best wishes on your home search!

Since the OP last posted in August of '07, I'm guessing he found a place or lost his bookmark for here!
