Our family is planning a move next year, and we plan to send resumes to three diferrent states. We've decided on Raleigh and Louisville, and wanted to find an area in Pennsylvania that suits our family's needs. I don't even know where to start, though!

We're interested in a place with excellent schools, affordable housing (affordable to us is 250k for 2,300+ square foot home in good neighborhood), low crime, growing job market (husband's in construction, so it has to be a place with long-term stability), and a university within driving distance so that I can pursue my Phd.

Can anyone PLEASE recommend a starting point for us to research?

I would recommend Pittsburgh, big on affordability and lots of great universities, but the job market is just not up to par yet there. It is improving, however. What exactly are you going for Ph.D. in? The Philadelphia suburbs (though not very affordable) or Lehigh valley sound good for you, or possibly State College (though again lack of job opportunities and not quite as affordable there). The Harrisburg area is also a good choice for affordability, low crime, and good schools with several universities in driving distance.
