In my previous post, I was not sure we would be moving but now it looks pretty certain that we will be going to State College within the month-ish. I am attempting to find out all that I can before we do so and would appreciate ANY info on the place.

Schools: I have researched the school districts and have found what looks good according to the reports but I would love if someone could give me first hand knowledge of specific elementary schools, as well as preschools in the area. We have a 1st grader and a pre-k kid.

Home: I have been stalking Craigslist everyday but, as you may know, finding a place this close to the beginning of the school year is a challenge. I have a few places we will look at when we visit but any specific suggestions on areas to look in? I hear Holmes-Foster is good but have not found anything available. Is there another site like Craigslist that I can search? I am not interested in an apartment. We are looking to spend no more than $2000/month.

Any advice or even stories about growing up there would be much appreciated. This will be a big change for our family, I am sure. But I am trying to find out all I can before we move. I appreciate all of the previous responses to my last post too!

Thank you so much.

State College, PA - Penn State Apartments and Apartment Rentals - it says apartments but under "type" you can specify house or townhouse.

You should be able to find TONS to rent in the State College area in that budget. How close do you want to be to State College? One of the best school districts in the area (the last time I researched) was the Bald Eagle Area School District-- in particular the elementary school in Howard.

I didn't check that link above, but you can check out the Centre Daily Times website (centredaily.com I believe) and get some additional information on the area.

Where are you moving from? I grew up about 45 minutes from State College, and spent 31 of my 33 years in the Central PA area. State College is very much a college town (obviously), and the downtown is really nice. The mall kinda stinks (as most do now), but they have lots of other stores outside the mall and the staple chain restaurants.

Good luck with your move-- I hope it goes smoothly!

How great for you. State College is one of my favorite places on earth! You'll love it there. Its a small city, but the University brings in a great deal of diversity and energy that it competes with the laid-back and conservative nature of the town. Its a win-win.

If you are looking for nice neighborhoods, there are several. On the south/west side is an area that is growing off Whitehall Road. The other more established but nice family neighborhood of Park Forest is also great.

i live in a small community about 15 minutes from state college called Mifflin County. if you have school age children, we just built a brand new highschool and will be moving into it this year (something to look at) we also have an abundance of elementary schools! Though state college is a great place to visit, i wouldn't recommend having such small children grow up there. look more into Mifflin county! it has a small town feel and we would love to have you(:

Where in Mifflin, Reedsville or Lewistown? Seem pretty far from town, especially if you were going to school.

Why wouldn't you want to raise little kids in State College?

Isn't Burnham just before Lewistown off 322? if so, that is more like 30-45 minutes from State College. Plus, going over seven mountains isn't always fun, especially in the winter. In State College, all of the public elementary schools are equally strong, I don't think you will go wrong with whichever your children will attend. Bellefonte has the next largest school district in Centre County, and it is good too. However, if you don't want to live in a small town, then State College is for you. Finding a rental at this point will be kinda tough, statecollege.com and craigslist are the best way to find rentals. Have you considered buying? In State College, most people who can rent up to $2000 buy. I don't know if that works for your family, but if it does, you can get a 3 bedroom, 2 bath in SC in the mid $170,000s.http://www.1kbb.com/ is a good website to search for homes. Good Luck!

We attend cultural events in State College frequently, both through the local community and Penn State. The downtown is quite urban in feel for the region, due to the university bringing so many young and international students. I noticed that there is a LOT of housing going up all around town, and accompanying strip retail - some of it is just plain sprawl, which is a shame, IMO... I personally would prefer living in a town neighborhood, esp if I had kids. Beyond the sprawl the region is quite rural in all directions (depending on what you're looking for, or looking to avoid)...

I don't know about housing costs, but you can eat well and cheaply in State College due to the many fresh markets, retailers, and restaurants that cater to students. (You can also eat well and expensively if you wish; I have to ration my trips to Wegman's food court and the Corner Room ) We especially enjoy bringing home treats from the various international food markets and there are two reliable Indian restaurants that we frequent. Penn State is also a leading ag school, so there is a strong culture of grass-roots food in the region.

There are several designated natural areas near State College for hiking & camping, some that are affiliated with Penn State and some that are State of PA forest land; there are lots of programs for families and kids.

I've always thought it would be nice to live in State College but I'd miss my river

Best wishes on your move!
