Nowhere in PA is there a gang influence as there is in places like LA.....while there are gang members in PA, they are usually here to sell drugs, and unless you're into drugs you will never knowingly come across a gang member. There are no turf wars and shootouts in the streets of small-to-medium sized PA cities.

Unless you look for trouble, you'll never know they're here. They usually swoop in from NYC, NJ, or Philly, sell their drugs to local scumbag addicts, then leave.

Well, I recall in Reading there was a driveby that killed a kid... and that's a medium city. It has a fair amount of gang violence.

You hit the nail right on the head,a very acurate statement.

You also don't know that every shooting is gang-influenced. I'm not saying we shouldn't be concerned about gangs, but the hysteria gets to be a little bit over the top. When people start talking about gangs moving in, they somehow picture cities like Scranton, York, Harrisburg, Allentown, Bethlehem, etc, turning into Compton, with turf wars and gang banging, etc. That's not really an accurate picture of the gang situation in most of PA. The gang members usually keep a low profile here.

Hi! i'm a life long lehigh valley resident and have lived all over (breingsville, allentown, orefield) so i've got prespective on good and bad areas. There are cons to the parkland SD area, a lot of them. Speaking as a parkland grad (class of 05') i'll be the first to admit, it's a great school. However, a lot of kids seem to have drug problems, drinking problems, sex issues...and it's not new. Parent's seem to have a problem taking accountability for their children, and therefore i'd overall preffer east penn SD to parkland SD.

Allentown isn't all sketchy, if your willing to spend the money, move to west allentown and send your child to private school. If that's not an option, allentown SD is a little rough, but not all that bad.

I live on Hamilton st and it's actually very nice, Linden is a sketchy though, i stay clear of that street. Go up another block and walnut isn't all that bad. South allentown is also pretty nice. I'd just stay clear of anything in center city...Past seventh on tilghman till you get to 2nd st.

That's just my opinion.

Did anyone happen to notice that this thread was started in June of 2006 and resurrected every few months? The OP has apparently decided to move to NY according to her most recent post from September 16 2008. We can certainly talk about gangs but maybe a new thread would make more sense.

The gang problem and drug creeped out of New Jersey and NYC along the route 222 corridor and has spread west at least as far as Lancaster. Allentown/Bethlehem, Easton, Reading, Lancaster, Harrisburg. Even Lebanon has some activity and so does Carlisle and York, although that probably is more from Baltimore.
I think Reading is more controlled by Philadelphia, Allentown by NYC. There were some major pot and drug busts recently and the kingpins were from Philly. When the drug killings were worst back in the 90s, you had gangs fighting for control and I think it was NYC and Philly based rival gangs. 80 to 90% spanish.
