Butler is a relatively small town with a mall, several shopping plazas, walmart, sams club, a fairly active downtown/mainstreet and most franchised restaurant chains. Steel, agriculture and tourism are the three main industries. Lots of small mfg businesses and service operations. Lots of history and historical sites around the area. Many small, quaint towns all around Butler. Butler has it's own Symphony, Choral Society, several community theatres, a community college, Slippery Rock University (and it's culture and sports!) It's about an hour north of Pittsburgh's big city cultural centers, sports teams, etc. It's all in what you make of it I guess... Oh my........heroin??? Do they put it in the drinking water??? Which are the scary neighborhoods? What is scary about them? Could you name some streets that I should stay away from?

Just like all towns, there's problems. And there are not so nice neighborhoods. Street names? Best advice to you is to just drive around, see the area. You'll get an idea of the nice areas, and the not so nice areas. ....And I do realise you are being facetious with your question on heroin in the drinking water.
I don't know what you're looking for in the way of home prices, if you have kids, etc, the area from Portersville into town on rte 422 is nice.
Just drive around, and rent first before buying. That way, if you don't like the area, you're not stuck.

Good church
Check out the Freeport Road Christian & Missionary Alliance Church. You'll be made to feel welcome. It's a loving church with many good people. If you'd like to go to Sunday school, I'd recommend going to the laid-back adult class downstairs. There are classes for kids as well. Nursery and children's church are provided during the morning service which starts at 10:45 a.m.

It struck me as being a rusting steel/ mill town with alot of old good buildings but with new developments going up and around. It looked like it had money in its day. Some good shopping areas. Grove City outlets are the best I've seen in Pa and I've seen many. They also had a great county fair in August. Good state parks nearby, McConnell's Mill was very scenic. It seems like a good area, close to Pittsburgh for day tripping and still pretty rural. The 60s Night of the Living Dead movie was filmed there and that cemetary is there somewhere.
