Well, I'm not a HUGE fan of Easton. I was born and raised here, but I will tell you, it's not as horrible place as some may think. If you live on the outside (Forks, Palmer, Wilson, Williams Township, West Easton, South Side, excluding Delaware Terrace) it can be nice. At the present, I WOULD NOT live downtown. I'm not so sure about the "statistic" about most of the murders being committed by people born and raised here, but...the above are really nice places to live, and it's not expensive. The commute to NYC is about an hour, and there are park and rides.

Default I don't agree with post about the commute killing you if you live in Pike County

From whose perspective? Orange County and all the surrounding counties in NY are very expensive and you don't cut out that much time on the commute. Milford is only 70 miles from NYC - pick up the train in Port Jervis and has great bus availability also. Many people live in Milford who work in the metropolitan NYC areas.

Please check out removed for more information about the Pike County area, including transportation

The PJ line takes forever and a day to get to NYC..even from the stop in Monroe it takes a long time. I can't imagine getting there in anything less than 2 hours if you take that line as from Monroe you are already looking at 1 hour. It is not so much the mileage it is the stops when you get south of Monroe.

DD lives in Walden and has a 50 mile commute to NYC which he can do by bus, train or car. He has been doing it for 30+ years. Asked him last year if he wanted to come out to Milford and live closer to us and he asked me if I had lost my mind LOL! Not to say that noone commutes from Milford because I do know people who do. If I had a choice I would pick eastern orange county if I was a NYC commuter.

There is no train from Pike county to New York or New Jersey. Nor is there any plan on adding one in the near or forseeable future. I know this because I worked for NJ Transit for 30 years and was responsible for Capital Projects and new service in the state of NJ.

FinnMan, is there any merit to this "pie-in-the-sky" promise that Scranton is going to have a commuter rail connection to Hoboken and a transfer to the PATH by 2009 or 2010? I'd be very interested in potentially living in Scranton and taking the train into Manhattan everyday, as I probably won't ever have a family to hold me down, given my lifestyle. Our local politicians continue to harp and harp and harp on and on and on again about how close we are to making this commuter rail line a reality; were those of you in NJ laughing at us at the same time for being fooled by our politicians? I just haven't heard any progress on this issue in many months now, even though I know of many PA commuters who'd gladly trade their I-80 commutes for a rail line. Thank you!

You have to go from Pike to Port Jervis NY (right over the border) and then get the train south. Total time to Penn Station: 2:20. In comparison, Monroe NY is 1:20 to Penn Station and a little less if you take the bus. I would gladly pay 75-100K more for a home in Monroe to not have to be on a train an extra 10 hours a week. Don't know about the rest of you though.

I really hope that this is true about the Train being available from PA to NJ. I don't understand why they don't have it in already. There are so many people commuting from PA to NYC already.

Does anybody have an opinion on moving from Phoenix, AZ to the Poconos? My wife is transfering jobs and will work in Broadheadsville. Any suggestions on a good place to live since we won't have to commute to NY. The crime is terrible in Phoenix with almost 4 million people now, so I doubt if that will be a concern of ours. Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks,
Glenn

ScrantonWilkesbarre, the possibility of a commuter rail train from Scranton to NYC is probably 1 million to 1. First off the state of NJ and PA have not even got together to discuss a joint funding of the project. The project if it ever happens will be most likely be funded by UMTA - 80% with remaining funding coming from the states. But that is only the Project state. This is not the operating costs per year. The operating costs per year will need to be shared by the states. Since PA has a history of not investing in mass transit, I perceive this as a stumbling block.

The most likely course of action which I see happening is the extension of service to the Delaware Water Gap area, probably with the construction of a storage yard near Analomink, PA. Service probably would be start from Mt. Pocono and terminate in Hoboken. Current operating rules prohibit the use of diesel locomotives in the tunnels and NYC. NJT has no plans to use dual mode locomotives at this time(electric & diesel). Commuters to NYC would need to change to a Mid Town Direct NJ Transit train at Dover or continue on to Hoboken and take the Path in.

Current NJT plans don't have this Project listed as a realistic possibility before2012. And since there is no request to fund the project and the states are not discussing the shared costs, I cannot see this being something which will happen in the next decade.

To clarify what I mean, I actually was involved with the original estimate to restore service on the line after CONRAIL tore out the 23 miles of track between Port Morris and the Gap. That was in 1984. The estimate at that time was a mere $67 mil. The estimate right now is up to $640 mil. and climbing. This is only the project costs, not the operating cost. That will be the back breaker. Passenger revenues typically only cover $0.50 on every dollar of expense. On a line like this, especially from Scranton, it could likely be only $0.15 to $0.20 on the dollar. That is why a Scranton extension is most likely not going to happen. Plus the time it would 2 1/2 to 3 hours from Scranton to Hoboken makes this very unattractive for a commuter. (6 hours commuting + 8 hours working = 14 to 15 hours r/t / day, not much discretionary time).
