Hey all,

I'm in the Pittsburgh area. Last Fall I made a (long) daytrip to the "new" Elk visitors center in Benezette. I'm heading up there again this weekend and was wondering what else I need to see while I'm in the general area. I'm hoping to do maybe a little bit of hiking as well as just taking pictures, etc.

Any ideas?

-SK

Check out Parker Dam State Park on the way by:

PA*DCNR*-*Parker Dam State Park

There are plenty of trails there and you may even see some elk there, depending on where you hike. The lake makes for some nice fall photo ops.

You could also drive north of Brookville a few miles and see Cook Forest State Park, but its a little out of the way.

Thanks Johnny. I actually made a visit to Cook Forest on the last way through . . . very worth the time. I loved it. I might have to check out Parker Dam.

I was at the new elk visitor center last week, quite a place, although I only saw the captive elk, and the front desk lady did not have a Quehanna Trail map. At Parker Dam's office they should have some trail maps though, the park itself is not large but is surrounded by wide areas of state forest. It's possible to walk from there to US 15 at Blossburg on maintained trails on state land, barring about a mile of roadwalk on PA 120 near Sinnemahoning.

wow-that must be quite a hike!

Any idea how long it is? And is there overnight camping allowed?

Parker Dam to Blossburg? That would be on the order of 200 miles, with some choices in the middle and the west end. Almost the entire stretch would be on State Forest land (camping allowed one night only out of sight of roads where not otherwise prohibited, such as in natural areas without a permit - that's why a permit is nominally required to hike the West Rim Trail in Tioga State Forest, because nearly all of it is in Pine Creek Gorge Natural Area).

Thanks all. Well, I did a LOT of driving in one day, from Benezette down 555 and 120 through Renovo to Hyner View State Park, down to Bald Eagle State Park before heading home.

Here's some Elk:

Thanks again. I love making the trip, but it's tiring.

Agreed, good pics. It's amazing how docile these animals are. Years ago we went with my brother-in-law and his wife. The brother-in-law insisted on getting uber close to the elk to take pictures -with my camera. Thankfully, the elk were in a really mellow mood that day.

A great place to stop and eat was the Medix Run bar/restaurant. Is it still there? Elk burgers!!
