Hello,
I will be a new resident of pa soon and would love to buy a gun. I have heard that this is much easier in pa vs md. I will be moving and residing in pa soon but may visit md occasionally for family and what have you. If I get a gun am I allowed to take it out of pa? ( there are a few great ranges in md I frequent now that I'd like to take it too) what procedure would I need to follow to obtain one in pa?

In short, yes, you can take it out of PA. If going to MD, you have to check and follow their laws regarding the transport of guns as they most likely differ from PA.

If you are considering pistols, and obtaining a concealed weapons permit for PA, you need to look at what states honor PA's permit. MD does not honor a PA CCW permit.

The NRA normally has good information on guns laws state to state. Another good resource would be Handgunlaw.us. This website also has maps of what states have reciprocity agreements when it comes to CCW.

If ever I'm shooing in Maryland, I'm very cautious to observe their laws. They are VERY strict.Ammo and guns in separate locked compartments, no magazines loaded or unloaded in the guns. All in all, there are hundreds upon hundreds of ranges in PA, I wouldn't risk taking them back to MD.

But to answer your original question, there is no Pennsylvania law prohibiting removing a gun from the state.

PA transport, gun and ammo must be in separate containers. If you do not have a valid LTCF, you are only permitted to transport guns to and from designated places including:

Home
Range
Gun Shop
Gun Smith
Moving from old home to new home

If you stop for gas, you're violating the law. If you take a detour to your mom's house, you're violating the law. If your dog poops on your seat and you pull over to clean the mess, you're violating the law.

If you do acquire your LTCF (super easy to do) then most of these restrictions are lifted, except you still have to transport long guns (rifles and shotguns) unloaded.

Where you at in PA? I can recommend plenty of ranges on the correct side of the Mason Dixon in south central and southeast PA.

DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT transport a handgun to MD. Your PA CCW is invalid here. Even long guns are problematic if you get stopped by the wrong cop.

I'll add to the previous post. DO NOT, DO NOT take a handgun into NY! They do not honor PA carry permits
