If staying in Bellefonte, definitely stay at a B&B! And make your first stop in town to the Chamber of Commerce in the train station in Talleyrand Park. There you will find lots of information and the workers will be happy to suggest some sights. While you are there, pick up the walking tour map: Walking Tour Maps from Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association BHCA. Bellefonte has great shops and restaurants, definitely try Jim's Italian Cuisine. Others suggestions would be The Gamble Mill(up-scale but lunch is quite reasonable), Hofbrau(dinner only), Cafe on the Park, Cool Beans, The Waffle Shop, and The Governor's Pub.
Downtown State College is also very nice, with cute shops and restaurants as well.
I definitely second taking 192 to Lewisburg. Such a lovely drive. And Penn's Cave is right along there, just past Centre Hall. Along that road you will go through some quaint villages, Madisonburg and Rebersburg. I recommend stopping at Elk Creek Dry Goods, located between Madisonburg and Rebersburg. There will definitely be some Amish in there getting their supplies!
Happy Travels!

Fantastic! It sounds like this just went from a semi-dull highway trek to something a lot more fun. Thank you everyone!

Sometimes on a trip you don't have time for a B&B. Choice (1) is convenient and close to I80, while choice (2) is your budget backup.

(1) Quality Inn (PA660) 971 N. Eagle Valley Road I-80 Exit 158 Milesburg, PA, US, 16853 (roughly $79) 118 rooms & indoor swimming
(2) Econo Lodge(PA601) 3482 Benner Pike Bellefonte, PA, US, 16823 (about $54) 47 rooms

Gamble mill is a nice place to dine.
Gamble Mill is 5 miles from Quality Inn

BLACKENED SALMON | andouille sausage & sundried tomato cream sauce | fettuccine pasta | $25
SEAFOOD STRUDEL | shrimp | scallops | crab | lobster cream sauce | potatoes-chive puree | $24
