Hello,

My husband is in the military and he just received orders to Erie, PA. He is due to check in no later then march 15 which gives us very little time to move. My main concern is finding a nice area to live in with good schools since I have a kindergartner. If anyone can give me the best neighborhoods to live in or near erie it would be much appreciated . Also since we're military we dont want to buy, we prefer to rent. Looking online isnt very helpful there's not a lot of rentals. Should I contact a realtor?

Well first of all welcome to Erie and there are many nice areas around Erie, it is a great place to raise a family. For elementary schools I would recommend Harding, which is on the westside of the city and very highly rated and any of the Millcreek or Fairview schools. Finding rentals in Erie online is very hard and my wife and I had the same issue a few years ago. I recommend the Frontier area of the City of Erie (Harding District) or Millcreek since there are a decent amount of rentals in this area. Additionally, in Erie it is usually easier to find rentals in person (signs in the window) or by using the newspaper.

Here is the link for the newspaper classifieds: GoErie.com: Classifieds

Erie is kind of a weird rental market and it is much, much cheaper to buy right now than it is to rent. With that being said, I know your circumstances do not allow for this so I will also talk to some of my neighbors and see if there are any rentals available in the near future. People in Erie are very nice and willing to help you with most anything.

Here is a map of the Frontier area I was talking about:

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=front...en&sa=N&tab=wl

Anywhere between 12th street to the south and South Shore Dr. to the north and the Bayfront Parkway to the east and Peninsula Dr. to the West is a good bet. Also, the border for Millcreek is Pittsburgh Ave. and anything west of Pittsburgh is Millcreek and east of Pittsburgh is Erie. My wife and I currently live in this neighborhood and love it. We also have some friends who live right by the Shriners hospital and they really enjoy being close enough to Harding to let their kids walk to school.

When you are looking at Millcreek and Fairview most areas are pretty nice, but areas around the airport can be a little noisy at times.

Welcome to Erie! Where will your husband be working? How far does he want to commute? Will you be job hunting as well? Do you prefer city, suburb, small town or rural living?

Track is correct in that the newspaper is still one of the best sources for rentals; here are a couple of additional rental links for you (my school chums work at these organizations; they may or may not be appropriate for your family):

Welcome | aptassoc.com

Erie PA Real Estate : Regina Baldwin Realtor

Welcome! - Pastore Builders

Howard Hanna Real Estate Services - Real Estate - Erie - Property - Proplist
This link will take you to a map of available rentals through this company.

Good luck!

Wow Ohiogirl81, those links you provided were awesome.
I want to live in this place lol, but I am not sure my wife we let me move since we just bought a house: View Property | aptassoc.com

I love the rooftop windows and this has to be one of the most unique loft apartments I have ever seen.

I've looked at a lot of places, especially the links you've provided. Many of these locations only have 2 bedrooms or not avaliable. From what everyone has said I definitely want to stay in the millcreek area. Specifically for the schools. One realtor gave me a new development called woodland hills.

The realtor told me it is in the city but a very nice area, can anyone please tell me if that is true?

Ok this is actually a very good area of the city and it is close to Mercyhurst University. The townhouses you posted are in the city of Erie, right by the border of Millcreek. If you are only going to be using the elementary school, which is Connell for this area, I have no issues recommending it for you. Connell is a great school for the area and definitely one of the top in the city. The only two elementary schools in the city that I have consistently heard good things about are Harding and Connell. The only issue I have with the above property is that for the price you could probably find a single family home in just as good of an area to rent. I am not sure if you want a single family home to rent, but that would be my preference.

Here are a few other options for you:

6205 Raymond Court, Erie PA - Trulia
(This one is in Fairview, but a little pricey)

4516 Allegheny Road, Erie PA - Trulia
(Not sure which school district this one is though, you may need to check into this)

House For Rent at 2218 BROOKSBORO DR, Erie PA 16509 : RentalGuide.net
(This one looks really interesting, and I like the attached garage)

8760 Peach Street, Erie PA - Trulia
(I think this one is in Millcreek, but I am not sure)

544 Montroyale Dr, Erie, PA 16504 - Zillow
(This one is definitely Millcreek)

Millcreek 3 bed 1
(They say it is in Millcreek)

Townhome in Millcreek
(Millcreek Townhouse)

4BR / 1BA Home in Belle Valley
(Millcreek House)
