Hi, my husband and I are thinking of relocating to the Hanover/York PA area from southern MD, or at least considering it. Can anyone tell me what these areas and surrounding areas are like? We have a son, and we are looking for a nice size home with a little bit of land to raise him in. My husband works in the DC/Baltimore area, so were also not too sure about the commute there and back. He works all over MD, so it varies, but mostly northern MD. I'm basically just looking to find out basic info about these areas; schools, communities, crime, local stores, commute, etc. Thanks!

Default Check out Shrewsbury

My niece's family live in New Freedom, just outside Shrewsbury, York County, and they love it there. Her husband works outside Baltimore and the trek down Route 83 can be a chore, but it's doable. Their children are doing well in school and they live in a suburban/rural area of rolling green hills that are pretty nice.

commuting to northern MD wouldn't be a problem, but southern MD could be a strain. I commuted to southern MD for a while and got the ****s of it eventually.

I'm more familiar with the York area than the Hanover area, so I'll stick with talking about York. You would have no problem finding a nice house with some land, the cost of living is much cheaper than what you're used to. The schools in the county are all decent except for the York and Hanover city school districts.

All the small towns around the county are usually the same, it would just be your preference on where within the county you would want to live. I'd assume you would want to stick south of York city. Places like Red Lion, Dallastown, Shrewsbury, Stewartstown, New Freedom, Glen Rock...these all have their own charms. The crime rates are pretty non-existent outside York city limits.

My advice if you were thinking of moving there take a weekend or two and drive up to the area and scout around for yourself through all the small towns and suburbs and get a feel for the area.
