My sentiments exactly. I've never felt threatened, but I've definitely felt like I need to take a shower immediately after passing through.

It's "The Stuff" as I've been referring to it as since I was a little kid. Growing up in Westmoreland county, I noticed this grimy filmy feeling I'd get any time I went to Pittsburgh or Washington or anywhere close to the Greater Pittsburgh Area. Hard to describe, but VERY real. It probably is what causes all of the cancer that makes this area so renowned for it's "word class" health care facilities. I never really understood that being a positive thing btw. Doctors and hospitals follow the money like any other type of capitalist venture.

I think it's just psychological. The entire city is dirty and neglected. You notice it subliminally, if not consciously. There is just a patina of neglect everyplace. The historic homes are cheaply remuddled and aluminum or vinyl sided. It's just a typical western PA Rust Belt dead town.
