Hi everyone! I am a working professional who just accepted a full time position in State College, PA. My first day on the job will be May 19th. I was wondering if anyone had advice as to a good place to look for housing. I prefer not to be in an apartment building full of students, since I'm approaching 30, and looking to get my career on track. I also want to keep it within my budget, so I'm trying to keep it below $900 if at all possible. I'm definitely looking into other areas such as Bellefone or Pleasant Gap. The problem is that there's a lot of low income housing in those locations, and I just make enough to not qualify for that. Any help would be appreciated!

The good news is that they built too many new apartments in SC and rents are down a bit. The bad news is that the cheapest apartments are the ones that attract students. The best way to avoid problems with student neighbors is to rent a townhouse. You may have to pay a bit more than 900 per month but you can rent out one of the bedrooms to another professional. Bellefonte is a good place to live if you work in State College. I'd steer clear of in-town Bellefonte and look for something on the outskirts. Not a whole lot cheaper than SC, but some - plus less traffic and fewer students.

Thanks for all of the tips and information, I appreciate it! I will have a starting salary of $33,000/year, which isn't great, but I think it's doable. I calculated, and it's recommended I don't spend more than $825/month on rent plus utilties. Easier said than done of course!

You may want to try the Villas at Happy Valley, about 10 minutes outside of Downtown State College in College Township, near the Nittany Mall. My best friend (an attorney who works for PSU) and her fiancee (a teacher in Blair County) live in a 3-BR/3.5 BA townhouse there that is absolutely gorgeous, and I believe their rent is around $1,600/month. The units are very spacious, so if you could find two other roommates you'd each be paying ~$530/month in rent (plus 1/3 of the utilities among the three of you). My friend and her fiancee are 28 and 29, respectively, and there are other "non-undergrad" types there, too. Their one neighbor is a middle-aged single father who works in Altoona and lives there for the good public schools for his son. I also see others who seem to be in their late-20s/early-30s whenever I visit.

The bus to State College goes right by the community on Dreibelbeis Street. You can also walk to Walmart, Sam's Club, Barnes & Noble, the Nittany Mall, and various restaurants. There's also a Sheetz and a movie theater nearby.
