I think it is called a power plant.

Perhaps inadvertently, you are proving that away from academic debates, when it is personal you are choosing fossil fuels. Why not put up couple of windmills?

haven't windmills been tied to killing birds and bats which eat insects (a natural insecticide)?
would it be more useful to subsidize geothermal (whose main problem is high upfront cost with benefits to long term that most people won't realize them) than windmills?

They have generators for larger buildings and then use the "waste" heat for heating, hot water or whatever. It's super efficient especially in the winter but doesn't scale down to household needs because you don't have that constant need for power.

Well the way I look at it there is a big difference between an already drilled well that is pretty shallow when compared to fracking a new well that is very deep. Also, windmills are not allowed in the city where I live, I actually already checked.

I don't think it matters. A 2KW wind generator costs $2500 and then there is the mast. I am sure it won't be cheap. Oh, to get that 2 KW you need 45 mph wind! I bought a 4 KW portable generator for $299, and I don't have to wait for the wind to kick up. This is how far alternatives have to come.

I know someone that put one in, said the mast and base cost as much as everything else. He apparently got ripped off, they did a wind study that was flat out wrong. He expects he might get a return in 25 years if it lasts that long.
