We live in Lancaster County and today there was a man in a truck going door to door selling frozen meat. He ended up talking my hubby into buying $270 worth of steaks ... Yeah my man is a sucker for a steak. So I googled the company (Midwestern style quality steaks) and saw a ripoff report. The man had told us that the neighbor two doors down from us was a close family friend who also bought his meat. After he left, my husband went to the neighbors and asked about it And they had no idea who we were asking about. so my husband found the guy and tried to get a refund. He didn't want to give it to us so I called the police and then he did.

Did anyone else have an experience like this? I was wondering if anyone bought the meat and ate it??

I did buy from a guy like that and the meat was great. It wasn't a scam.

I've had them come thru my sub/div here in Atlanta. Bought one time, Was good quality meat, but little overpriced.

The Price they are giving you is negotiable, Later in the day the better you can strike a better deal. They Don't Want to return to there base @ the end of the day with anything left. They get a FULL load from a Tractor trailer each morning, so they have to move the stock.

Normally a bunch of truck will descend on a area for a week or so, set up shop from a low rent Motel somewhere near by. Fan out and sell all week, then move on. Often 30+ Pickup with a bunch of freezers (Run all night, plug'ed into Motel power) They head out around noon-1p, and go until about 9-10p (weekdays) 8a-10p Weekend/Holiday. If its very hot they will do dry ice to keep the meat frozen. (That cost them more money ... ) when the overnight freeze starts to melt, they do the dry ice to keep it frozen.

Note: I Don't remember the name of the company that sold it. Just its motive of operations.. I got a good batch... but i see online that some got ripped off... So go carefully..

You take a chance when you buy meat (especially beef) from a door to door peddler. You don't know what the grade is, who processed it and what precautions were taken in storage, handling and delivery. The meat may have come from old dairy cows or bulls or been condemned at the slaughterhouse.

The Lancaster Harrisburg area should have a wholesale meat and/or grocery purveyor with an outlet store open to the general public. Buy your beef there in whole cryopac primal cuts and be sure that the grade stamp is visible.

In the Scranton area there is Schiff's Food Service with an outlet on North Main Avenue to give an example.

My wife bought steaks and tuna steaks from a guy like that. The meat was a good deal, but the quality was just average.

My personal opinion is never buy anything from anyone you have not sought out.
