Does anyone know of any schools or school districts that have good programs for a child with Asperger's Syndrome in the Harrisburg area? Our current school district no longer wishes to work with our son in a mainstreamed environment and is trying to place him in a out of school placement. We are trying desperately to get the proper services for our son and the school has fought us left and right.

What does your son's IEP say? Is the LIU involved in any way?

You need to get the local LIU that services your school district engaged in this discussion. School districts can not just stop delivering services without a complete evaluation (or re-evaluation). You are also entitled to have/hire your own professional to submit opinions/observations/recommendations as well. Hopefully you can all come to an agreement on what is best for the educational needs of the child/student. Sometimes the local school districts don't have the personnel, but the LIU will have a person, perhaps in another school, that is trained to work with this special population.

One good school district is located in Bucks County Pennsyvlania. The Council Rock School District has one public school (Goodnoe Elementary) that supports an Asperger's program. While the district took over the program this year, they are working to improve the effectiveness of the program. The school has 6 classes for students who have Asperger's (one for each grade level). The children spend part of the day in a small class and the rest of the day mainstreamed. Some students with Asperger's are mainstreamed full time. Part of the curriculum includes learning about social skills. It is something to look into as I know children in this program. Also, call the Education Law Center in your area. I know there is one in Philadelphia. They can give you in writing your rights and also possibly direct you to someone who can help advocate for you and your child's rights.

Sorry for the late reply, we lost power due to the ice for a few days. Yes my son has a IEP and yes we have asked for a revaluation. Still the school is pushing for a out of school placement. My son has been mainstreamed in the past with great success, in the right enviroment and the right teachers. But at this point the school not longer wishes to try and is asking for an out of school placement. Their only suggestion is not an suitable enviroment for a child with PDD. That is why I'm trying to find a school in the Harrisburg area that has a good program for asperger's children.
Thanks
