I was planning on taking a trip this weekend that involves taking route 78 west to 81 S and then staying on 81 S for about 300 miles. I was planning on leaving some time on Friday morning (December 28th) I was wondering if anyone could give me a heads up on what to expect traveling on 81 through Pennsy and further down south. What times should I avoid being on it? What is 81 like? ect ect. I greatly appreciate any help you can give me.

You shouldn't have much trouble at all along I-81. Traffic can be a bit heavy once you get around Harrisburg, and especially near the I-83 split headed towards York and Baltimore, but I-81 past the city headed towards Carlisle is never very congested. Considering it's well above freezing up here in the Arctic tundra that is Scranton, I'd presume South Central PA should only have dry roads as well.

Merry Christmas!

My son has been driving this route for a couple of years when he goes from Allentown area to Roanoke, VA for his college breaks. Great drive, except for the darn trucks and construction near Hamburg, PA. Have a safe trip!

Out of curiousity, how long does the trip take from Allentown to Roanoke? It's all non stop, no lights? Is it 6 or 8 hours, assuming maybe one meal stop and a gas stop?

Exactly right, Icy Tea. When he hits it right it's 6 1/2 hours (he's actually in Salem, 1 exit South of Roanoke) but if there's traffic, like the Wed. before Thanksgiving, it can be 8 hours. There are not too many parallel roads to take once you make the South hook towards Virginia either if there is a stoppage on 81.
