It's pretty safe to say that by 2050, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh will continue to be the largest urban areas in the state. It was brought up in another thread that, although Allentown is the 3rd largest, it does not "act" it. By 2050 will Harrisburg pass up Allentown due to its growth (being nearest to DC), Scranton (from the influx from NYC), or any other city in PA pass up Allentown? Thoughts?

For Info (MSA/CSA populations in PA):

Philadelphia ~ 6,030,000
Pittsburgh ~ 2,669,000
..
..
..
..
Allentown ~ 821,000
Scranton ~ 564,000
Harrisburg ~ 549,000
Lancaster ~ 508,000
York ~ 435,000
Reading ~ 414,000
Erie ~ 281,000
State College ~ 156,000
Johnstown ~ 141,000
Altoona ~ 128,000
New Castle ~ 100,000

**Also worth thinking about/noting that these smaller metropolitan areas may be integrated into larger metros:

Allentown > New York City or Philadelphia
Lancaster > Philadelphia
York > Baltimore, MD or Harrisburg
Reading > Philadelphia or New York City
Johnstown > Pittsburgh
Altoona > Pittsburgh
New Castle > Pittsburgh

Without those choices:

Scranton ~ 564,000
Harrisburg ~ 549,000
Erie ~ 281,000
State College ~ 156,000

I think it will still be Allentown. Reading is already part of the Philly area so it won't be a threat to the Lehigh Valley and I don't think Erie will grow fast enough to claim the #3 spot.

Metro. Is the question not clear/should I revise it?

It will continue to be Allentown since it is the fastest growing of the smaller cities.

A couple of cities might have dramatic growth in the next 25 or so years might be:

Bethlehem

Westchester

Why Bethlehem and not Allentown? Because I think "Christmas City" is a more desirable place to live and folks working in the Lehigh Valley region might choose it over sketchier places like Allentown or Easton. It has a big casino now and it located not too far from NYC or Philly - some will even opt to commute to those metropolises from here. It's a university town and that is a plus.

Westchester is growing. It too is becoming a preferred place to live in the farther suburbs of Philadelphia. It has a very attractive downtown area and lots a good restaurants. I think Westchester has a bit of "cachet" that appeals to upwardly mobile middle class folks. It has a respected university. Just a hunch on my part, and I understand it is small town of under 20,000 right now ... but if it annexes more territory and some major development happens, who knows?

I've randomly visited the city of West Chester for work last Spring. It was beautiful. Loved the downtown. Ate at "Mas" an amazing Mexican restuarant. Who knew in the middle of pennsylvanis is good mexican? lmao. but yeah west chester was hella chill, I could see it growing fast and its not far from that king of prussia mall, which is like a bonus.
