I just got a letter from my electric company (Met Ed) stating I have to certify in writing that I'm living in my house or they will be forced to start charging me sales tax on my electricity.

Is this new? I moved here in 1993 (from NJ) and never heard of sales tax on electricity anywhere.

Looks like it's taxable unless it's for personal use, they must think it's business property.

Thanks for the link. So it looks like it's not new, but it is weird because we are zoned R1 around here which Met Ed must know. I guess they are verifying now rather than assuming, like they apparently did in 1993.

If I'm reading that correctly if it's rental property and someone is living there the electricity would be taxable if it were in your name. They must think it's a rental property.

Nah, it's my house. What happened was: Met Ed's sister company got out of the "retail electricity" (whatever you call it) business and I defaulted back to Met Ed as my supplier. Coalman, you even provided me with a link for electricity shopping on that other thread back in December!

So I am technically a "new customer" and this must be something all new customers have to do now. No biggie, I've already faxed the completed form in.
