HookEm, Im glad you have decided on PA and you will not be dissapointed. Just to set the record straight, nothing specific against your preferences for location to live, but there does seem to be a lot of anti-MD hate on these boards...

The Mason-Dixon line is just that, a line. The communities of Northern Baltimore, most of Carroll and most of Harford Counties are just like PA. Farming communities, more so Horses in MD, but not very suburban, more rural and people of mostly German decent. The communities are blended, people crossing the 'line' and shoppping, working and living between the two states. There is not much difference between the two areas, except the government structure and Cost of Living (oh and Roads ! ).

I know I would love to live in MD again if I could afford it, but sadly I cant so I drive a long distance to work in MD and live in PA. And I did this so my wife could raise my 2 year old son.

So make sure you go down to visit some of the places in MD and you might find that it is not as different and scary as others would lead you to believe.

I understand what you mean... I am sure there are some people here in Texas that can't stand the state, and that is just not right!!!! hahaha!!!

Thank you for the advice. I will fly in to Baltimore and we will just take our time driving up and looking around... I promised myself to not rush things.

Are you trying to commute to MD?

If not, many love State College. Small town, but a lot of amenities because of Penn State. Lots of outdoor activities and cultural events.

Love it!

Well, I hate to bust everyone's bubble but the grass is not always greener on the other side. If you don't mind being stuck in a car and commuting to the Baltimore area, go for it and more power to you. But, for me, I hate commuting and found a nice place in Maryland to call home. Yes, in Baltimore. My commute is by foot and sometimes by metro on bad-weather days. I have never been affected by crime here in the city and have been here for awhile. While not spending an hour in a car, I walk my dogs in a lovely park, take a soak in the hot-tub, do some reading, maybe go out to eat, or any other little things. I prefer that. But, I understand not everyone is like me so if you don't mind the commute, again, go for it.
I am not downgrading Pennsylvania at all. I love going there and have many friends in the York area and also a sister in Spring Grove.

I actually did it for 2 months when we first moved here. It didn't get bad until you got to Shawan Road, that's where the problem always begins.

It also depends on the time of day.

Rhonda is referring to where I83 goes from two lanes to three right outside of the Baltimore Beltway. You would think expanding the highway would lessen the traffic. It doesnt.

But I can leave @ 5 am from Red Lion and Make it to the first exit on I695 in 45 minutes. That 15 minutes of traveling the back streets until I got to Exit 10 on 83, then 30 minutes to Baltimore Beltway. But if you leave at 6 until 7:30 it will be bad. For some reason there is a lull at 7:30 and I can get to work in 5 minutes later than leaving early.

However, if there was a traffic incident ealier, all time frames are messed up and there is traffic in that one window.

But the point is, depends on what time and where you are coming from.

I am not really sure anymore. I had not really planned on it (my commute in Dallas is a whole 7miles). The more I heard the more it sounded like I should. UnlessI find this great job in a small town, haha

I live along the I-83 commuter route on the MD side. My advice to anyone considering a commute to anywhere is that they drive the route a few times before making a decision. Mr p.a.gal gets up at 5am to drive down into the city before 6. I leave at 8:30 and several times a week, am sitting on the I-83 parking lot. When it runs well, it's great but it doesn't take much to back up this drive in rush hour.
