George Curry, who amassed over 400 victories and two admittedly-hypothetical National Championships in a career of nearly half a century, passed on from the effects of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS -- sometimes called "Lou Gehrig's Disease") on Friday 4/1.

To an "outsider" it can be difficult to explain why the institution of American tackle football (sometimes jokingly described as short spasms of complete mayhem punctuated by committee meetings) has attained the position it holds in our traditions.

But let it just be noted that the game most closely identified with the culture nurtured in the hundreds, even thousands of small- and medium-sized, predominately blue-collar communities can't ever be disassociated with the stamp it has left upon our collective psyche and values.

The Berwick, PA, to which George Curry came in the early Seventies was a weakening community, living on depleted traditions and without an anchor on which to re-invent itself. Many civic and community leaders played their parts in the revival which ensued, but the community's athletic traditions focused that effort, and the positives it produced, in a lesson that all of us could understand.

Thank you, Coach Curry.
