Mod note: This thread was started in 2008

How big is the Jersey shore as a vacation/beach place for native Pennsylvanians?

If so from what regions, when do they go, and to where along the shore?

Thank you very much

I do love your state alot

For people in the Philadelphia metro area and Lehigh Valley (Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton area), going to the Jersey shore during the summer is very, very common. People in SE PA generally go to Atlantic City or points south, and people in the Lehigh Valley will go to either these places or places NYC area people go to in central Jersey.

People in south central PA are more likely to go to Delaware or Maryland when they go to the shore, but some residents here will go to the Jersey shore.

I'd guess NE PA natives who go to the shore would also head to the Jersey coast (most likely the central Jersey coast) if they vacation at a shore along the Atlantic Coast.

Of course, none of the above even addresses the people who go to Jersey Shore (a town in central PA a little west of Williamsport).

The Jersey Shore is a day trip for us when DH insists. I can't stand the horrendous drive to get there, the $$$ being sucked out of your pocket for everything from parking to a beach pass, and the crowding. Not my idea of a good time at all. We used to vacation there when we were first married, but most of the lodging is outdated and way overpriced. We have visited primarily the Sandy Hook and Seaside Heights/Seaside Park/Island Beach State Park areas in NJ.

We prefer a vacation in the mountains. We can literally rent a house for a week for the same price as a cramped motel room at the shore.

Not necessarily, because New Jersey would be much further east than either Delaware or Maryland if you are coming from south central PA. The ocean temperatures are probably a little warmer in DE/MD than in NJ, and from south central PA if you going to New Jersey, especially south Jersey, you need to get through the Philadelphia area to get there.

You're assuming people actually want to go to NJ.
